Magic questions and observations

I've been listening to WYRD-HD2 for a few days now and I really like the mix of music. Much different than other on-line or SXM adult contemporary stations. But ....

They NEVER have any liners or sweepers between the songs. They say nothing going into the commercial breaks either. (Commercials are exceptionally limited.) Other than the required legal ID, I never hear them say "Magic Upstate."

I know why they are keeping the format alive -- just in case. No one else would be able to use the Magic brand. And I wouldn't be surprised if they have a deal with the new owners of WSPA 106.3 so that they are "holding" those call letters for Audacy, again, just in case. But shouldn't they use some of their old sweepers with the 106.3 or 98.9 edited out? How hard would that be?

Another question. They mentioned two translators in a legal ID at the TOH. One was Anderson and the other, Seneca. But I can't seem to find them on Radio Locator. (I'm sure it's just out of date - showing only religious formats on the translators in those towns.) Anyone know what frequencies?

Any thoughts as to why they are putting Magic on these two translators? Seems odd. Personally, I would have put their sports station on both and leave the music exclusively on the HD channels.

95.1 in Pickens County/Seneca and 101.5 in Anderson are still rebroadcasting WFBC-HD4/WYRD-HD2 with the Magic AC format, which makes zero sense considering they could put The Fan on both and greatly expand its reach. I've never understood why they continue to broadcast the AC format on those when there seems to be better use for them.

Audacy used to put a bit of effort in to keeping stations they flipped alive on HD2 channels, complete with imaging and even some special programming in some cases, but a couple of years ago they moved most of them to Audacy Pandora-style online only stations to cut costs. I'm honestly surprised they kept the Magic AC format on 98.9-2 and 93.7-4, but like you said, it's probably to continue to lay claim to the brand. So, I'd guess they're doing the bare minimum, or we might have seen Summit launch Magic 99.5 instead of Star.

The 101.5 in Anderson shows this:
Not a bad little signal. (They show it translating His Radio and with a construction permit to move to 95.9.)

But Radio Locator has nothing for 95.1 in Seneca. A Google search brought me to this dead listing, though. It shows it's off-the-air and also His Radio.

It's almost like Audacy kind of forgot about these two. Almost

Radio-Locator isn’t always the most reliable source and doesn’t give the silent reason. According to FCCData.org, 95.1 W236CD is under an STA due to the March fires which completely burned the transmitter site and equipment in Six Mile.

FCCData.org also shows W268DL in Anderson at 95.9 and rebroadcasting His Radio, as it has shown for years. I’m quite certain it’s still rebroadcasting Magic on 101.5 from what I’ve (barely) been able to get. I don’t think they ever updated the source for the programming with the FCC since 101.5 started being fed by either then-WSPA-HD2 or WFBC-HD4 to improve 106.3’s coverage in the news/talk days. Also never understood why they have Magic on 2 HD signals.

The proposed move from 101.5 to 95.9 came about after WLTE vacated the frequency and changed its COL to Powdersville.

First, I'd be curious if anyone can actually hear 95.1 to see if it's on the air. And, also, it's possible that one of the HD signals feeds one of the translators and the other feeds the other one.

When 106.3 was WORD, did they have the station on the two HD channels, too?

It's ✨ magic.

It would seem, from very fuzzy reception, Fan is now on 101.5 and 95.1 in addition to 97.1 and 97.7.

This should have happened over a year ago.

I noticed WFBC-HD4 no longer says “Upstate Red” or the incorrect Magic info. It just says something like “hd4 artist” “hd4 title”. Same with the HD2 (Block) and HD3 (Fan). I say just turn the HD4 off and pull the plug on Magic once and for all.

The HD info on 93.7 has reverted back to what it was before - 93.7-HD4 is playing Christmas music, but says “Upstate Red.” 93.7-2 and 93.7-3 are correct and have logos.

I was listening to The Fan this morning and noticed they’re only ID’ing 3 translators, 97.7 Greenville, 97.1 Spartanburg, 101.5 Anderson. I wonder what’s on the 95.1 translator in Clemson/Seneca? FCCData says parent station WLFJ-FM, but it’s said that for years even though it simulcast WFBC-HD4. In fact, there’s no record I can find of it ever being licensed to simulcast WFBC-HD4.

Well, apparently Audacy opened the closet to the computer and running WFBC-HD4 after New Years and flipped it back to AC. Same AC playlist they had when they left the air in March 2023. They didn’t promote the Christmas music at all this year.

What is even the point? Why didn’t keep Classic Rock 101.1 around on an HD channel like they’ve kept the carcass of Magic alive all of this time?

They definitely aren’t going to get any 0.1 or 0.2 ratings now with the translators no longer carrying it. Also, WFBC-HD4 is still showing Upstate Red 🤣

Was in the Pickens/Liberty area recently, looks like 101.5 is playing the sports format, as was previously mentioned, but 95.1 translator was a simulcast of His Radio (same thing on 89.3 and 90.9). Seems pointless, so wonder if something else is coming soon.
