magic radio overload

If you live in Brevard, you can hear the Magic B'ball broadcasts on 4 stations: WDBO-AM, WDBO-FM, WSJZ-FM and WMEL-AM. Interesting that the DBO-AM and two Brevard stations are in synch, but DBO-FM has about a 6 second delay.

I'm assuming WDBO is the only Magic basketball game broadcaster with a "panic/dump" button, in case of a fleeting expletive?

HD, really? Why waste an HD slice when you already have AM and FM newstalk .... does somebody really need to Neal Boortz in crystal clear stero? No doubt they have delay/dump built in to the normal feed (what else does Scott Anez have to do all evening) ... I just found it odd the flagship FM station had 6 more seconds delay then the AM flagship and two affiliates.

HD Encoding delays the digital signal behind the analog one by roughly 8 seconds. So radio stations will delay the analog to match up with the digital. However some stations like to shut the delay off during sporting events (like WCBS 880 in New York during a Yankees game)

Why wouldn't WDBO delay the AM signal too, if they go to the trouble of holding the FM signal to match encoded HD feed? However, it's all for naught --- tonite I checked on the car radio (easy to flip between presets) DBO AM, FM and ESPN 95.9 FM all are in synch [1300am has high school bball tonite].

Does it really matter if you're listening to 96.5 and you're 8 seconds behind the AM? You're not listening to the AM station at the same time. The only time the problem arises is when you wanna have TVs on and run the radio signal as the audio. Most likely that doesn't work as well as it used too.

... and the F-bomb is gone - like "magic"! ;D

I heard a player yell "shxt" Thursday night ... delay or not, the man on the dump button (Scott A?) missed it.

I still am curious to see what will happen to the AM. I wonder if cox will try to sell it? Does 96.5 have better market coverage then 580 does? I know 580 runs 5 kw 24 7.

WDBO-AM has the best AM signal of all the Orlando stations. Cox would be wise to keep it and eventually find another format for AM 580 such as All News to compliment News-Talk WDBO-FM.

OK Mark. That's what I figured. 580 does have a very good signal. BTW I''m glad they put the magic games on fm as well. They sound incredible now.

I forgot just how good of a signal 96.5 had. I was listening to kim comando all the way from Palm Bay back to Altamonte with no problems at all. The AM defanatly has trouble over in that area.

A good sports talk station could make a lot of money. The Orlando market has never really had one.

I would think ESPN would be ecstatic to have some of their programming on a full-market signal, rather than 1080.

You already have the one major league franchise... carry the Rays, some college and NFL football, maybe find a way to cherry-pick some NASCAR and Indy races.

I've never understood how 740 has managed to do so poorly over the years (aside from the fact that most of the local content has been awful).
