Magnecord 1021

Hi, I'm looking for a service manual for a Magnecord 1021 single channel deck. I have one for the 1/4 track 1028 stereo machine, but I'm trying to modify the 1021 erase electronics so it will erase both half tracks on the tape. It already has installed a two track erase head. Anyone out there have one for this dinosaur?

Thanks,
Dennis

Measure the coil resistance across both tracks of the erase head. It's possible that it's a half track erase head. The other track may be a dummy.
If the head is a functional two track erase head, you may be able to wire the two tracks in series or parallel. You'll probably need to add or remove some capacitance from the output of the erase/bias oscillator to match the new impedance of the head.

The PT-6 units were extremely dependable and ideal for broadcast of the day. It appeared they lost the "fire in the belly" with their later products...mostly plastic and not very dependable IMHO.

Denny, One of the stations I work for had a 1021 several years ago and I think the book is still in the fileing cabinet. It will be a week or two before I can get there to look for it but I will try to find it. If I can find it I will scan it to a PDF file and e-mail it to you.

Thanks everyone for your responses and if you find it Robert, I'll be glad to compensate you for your trouble.

When I started in radio in 1967, the station had an old Maggy in the control room. I can't remember the model, but I don't believe it was a PT-6. This unit was able to take 10 1/2" reels, 7 1/2 and 15 IPS, had it's function button on the bottom left of the face plate and it had spring type reel hold downs. On fast forward or rewind you had to duck low because once in a while the aluminum reels would sail across the room spewing tape all over the place when those hold downs would come loose, fun days. The tube amplifier would also have a "motorboating" problem depending on how high the gain would be set. I worked with this machine for about two years before the station finally bought a Magnecord 1021. This was a big deal for our little 1KW station. Another little problem with the original Maggy that I just remembered was it had a hugh problem with wow and flutter. We had to record everything at 15 IPS and then it was barley air-able.

Well thanks again, I enjoy talking about the "good ole days", or where they, lol.

This might not be an issue with your equipment use, but using a two track erase head won't erase the full width of the tape. That might not be of any concern unless you have a full track playback head.

Yes, I understand this. If trying to record over a full track tape using a two track erase head, you'll have, what I call them, "guard bands" that will still exist on the tape. Most of my recordings where made with two track heads, so if I can mod the machine, at least it will also erase the right channel audio as well. This is just a pet project of mine trying to make this 1021 do something it wasn't designed to.

Thanks,
Denny

What about a bulk tape eraser?

I realize that might be a bit of a problem if you need to selectively erase channels, and even then, bulk erasers which can handle a 10.5 inch reel might be a tad scarce.

Good luck on your modification project.

Magnecord was purchased by Telex in late 1967, their machines went downhill afterwards soon. Telex also purchased Viking Of Minneapolis in the same time frame. Their interest was to enter the tape duplication market. Their machines (either brand were still OK decks). Telex made variants of this design into around 1990.

Yes, I have one of the "newer" Telex machines sitting in my garage, but it's missing a couple of parts in the tape gate area. I haven't looked at it in years, but I believe it's a three speed deck and uses different types of cables and connectors for the cabling between the playback heads and preamps instead of the RCA cables. I should bring it back to life.
