Maine notes in markets other than Portland

Some programming notes from stations as I've canvassed Central & Northern Maine

Mountain Wireless' 1160 WSKW in Skowhegan has flipped again from ESPN to classic country

WXME (Allen Weiner's AM on 780) has dumped it's talk programming for simulcasting WEGP's talk out of Presque Isle

Dan Preiestly's WGUY 1230 in Veazie is on, simulcasting the talk of 1340 WNZS

Still no sign of WRMO downeast...

Isn't that right around the frequency the old WGUY Bangor used to occupy? I think it moved to 1200 at some point, after which it became first WMLI, then (maybe?) WKIT AM and finally WNSW before it disappeared forever. Anyone remember what the original WGUY frequency was?

Sometimes at the top of the hour I'll think "It's 1 o'clock at 12 Rock." Still wish I had my "I 12 Rock in my car" sticker. It was a nice daytime station. I remember in the summer of '75 when I had to be to work at 6 a.m., and (I can't remember who it was on at 6 a.m., the official sign on time), but he'd put the station on around 5:40 and every weekday play side 2 of "Abbey Road".

A couple notes about wguy/ 12 rock/ 1230/ 1250/ 1200. A) It is on, simulcast only for now. Wguy, in 1953, was 1230. Later moved to 1250, got daytime power increase from 1k to 5k. Later moved to 1200, WGUY, for a short time, WMLI (music of your life), went away as the King's purchased what today is WKIT fm. Have a beat up 12 rock bumper sticker framed, along with old Y101, and Oldies 102.1 era memorabilia.
Interestingly enough, 1200 was a 10 kw 2 tower directional, 1230 and 1250 were single tower omni's. At some point in the 1940's, WGUY occupied a class 4 frequency of 1490?. I know it was 14 something, the way I remember the story, that later became Lincoln. When 1230 moved to 1250, 1230 assignment went to Belfast. I'd share the new WGUY phone #'s with you guys, but we've been waiting on Fairpoint since the week of Veterans Day

Anybody know there whereabouts of a couple of DJs from "The Big Guy" in the 60's? Jack Dalton and Bob McAlister (air name Bob Diamond). Remember this slogan "....now the weather from the Mile-High Big Guy Weather Eye"? They were also part of the Lobster Network.

I remember the night I shut off WNSW for the final time. In my mind it was still, historically at least, the station where I had first heard Rock and Roll, Little Eva with The Locomotion was the first song I remember hearing, my sister could get it in if she really worked at it, we were in Bar Harbor and you could barely get it in, but we lived up on a hill so reception was somewhat better. So anyway, Barry Darling, who was managing WNSW at the time, made a cart of The Doors "The End" to play at the stroke of midnight. It really felt weird for me to hit the remote and shut off that transmitter for the final time, once Morrison intoned "This...is...The...ENNNNNNNNND!", felt like a piece of my youth had gone with it. Probably hard or impossible for anyone in today's world to understand the importance of AM rock radio back in the day, without having lived through it, when it was ALL THERE WAS. For my part, I kind of felt like a traitor to my own youth when I shut that baby down for the last time.

I know how forevernight feels. I was there when Bob M moved the combo to Brewer Shopping Center. Remember NSW stood for News, Sports, Weather. Never really caught on. I regret that the station ever went away. Bob M came out of forced "retirement" and helped me re create WGUY in the early 90's. If any of you guys would like a tape (not great audio) of the last surviving tape I know of, I have a dozen or so of Mile high weather eye, When big Guy news ends, etc

Was that Oldies 102.1? I liked that quite well, and I was sorry when it went away. No real oldies at all now. Yep, News Sports and Weather, first thing I did for H&L (later to become the Zone Corp) was run board on that thing PT and try to keep the rather funky Carousel machines functioning as well as they could. By the way, I'm enjoying listening to Alan Colmes on the way home at night.

WRMO 93.7 is on silent authority for now according to their application on FCC Website. Last week I went up to their proposed transmitter site on Martin's Ridge near Franklin. No signs of any new antennas or equipment at the huge 200+foot Microwave tower there. However, it is an excellent location with a great wide open shot to the east.. Perhaps they will make it on in the spring. I doubt it would be feasible to do much antenna work during Jan. or Feb.

They were on for back on-air for a few weeks in October with very low power, running Easy-listening music, and announcments saying they were conducting equipment tests. I never did find their transmitter, it wasn't at their old site on Route 1 in Steuben.

Stay tuned.

What is WFST 600 in Caribou if that is in fact still their call letters doing these days? Are they still religious? I sure wish I could get an aircheck of that station from back in the sixties or early seventies when they were doing country. For some reason, I always had a real fascination with Caribou, and I often called the WFST weather phone just to see how cold Caribou was.

Not sure of the calls, but back in '86 when I was at WDEA Helen Dudman had me go to Caribou to get whatever albums I thought our (then) country library could use. Drove up with my Cocker Spaniel/Black Lab named Waylon and spent the whole day at the abandoned Xmitter site (it was on the left heading into town) poring over hundreds and hundreds of albums. Spent the night at the local motel (Caribou Motor Inn?) and came back the next day with a steamer trunk full to the gills. Good times.

Charles Begin (RMO) needs to learn there's a LOT of difference between a commercial FM and a part 15 AM run off a computer.

Sounds like a really super trip and it would have been so great to come back with all those country albums. And bonus, you got to take Waylon along with you too, so obviously he didn't mind car rides at all which most dogs don't. Dogs are such totally awesome creatures with their unconditional love. From 1990 to 2003, I had a black lab guide dog named Blazer, and he was truly my best buddy. He loved to party with me and he was a whole lot better at attracting women than I'll ever hope to be. Thanks for your great recollections here.
