Maine's 92.7 & 94.9

92.7 WOXO is increasing it's power from a Class A to a C-3.A is up to 6kw & C-3 is up to 25kw.Should greatly improve the signal in L/A and into the northern edge of Portland.
94.9 WSYY is reducing it's power & height.Good news for WHOM in the Bangor area. They are going from 23.5 kw down to 12 kw & the tower from 211 meters to 68 meters.

Looks like it may just be a temporary move for WSYY. I found this in their FCC application:

1) WE HAVE LOST THE LEASE ON OUR CURRENT TRANSMITTER LOCATION AND HAVE HAD TO REMOVE OUR TRANSMITTING EQUIPMENT.

2) BY GRANTING THIS STA WE CAN CONTINUE TO BROADCAST AND SERVE OUR COMMUNITY OF LICENSE UNTIL WE CAN BUILD A NEW FACILITY IN THE SPRING OF 2008.

3) WE ARE STILL LOOKING AT LAND FOR A NEW SITE AND WORKING ON OBTAINING FINANCING FOR AN HD FACILITY.

I assume they mean build a new facility in the spring of 2009, not 08. Why would they want to waste their money on installing HD Radio in the middle of nowhere?

I think this is the same owner that's been in a land dispute at the transmitter site (the owners want 'SYY gone)...The morning guy (who is also the owner) has also been on an on-air rant for the last year or so because a local non-comm might go on the air as competition

Does anyone know why WSYY moved from 97.7 to 94.9? Are there any better frequencies that could have used verses 94.9 so that they would not have to fight against WHOM?

Back in 80s when they applied to move from 97.7, it was a class A channel with only 6kw max power allowed. But 94.9 was/is a class C with 50kw max power. And they were far enough from WHOM (on paper) to be out of range...But to those of us in Eastern and DownEast Maine, WHOM was always a very strong powerful station. I don't know why WHOM didn't challenge the application. It was a long time ago, and I know it has been discussed on here before. I still remember getting WHOM atop Mars Hill in Arioostook County north of Presque Isle back in early 80s.

Since WSYY has lowered power, WHOM is back to near local strength south and west of Bangor. When driving up 95 from Southern New England this past week, I got them rock solid to just west of Bangor. actually to Dysart's Truck Stop, then dropped out once you get past 395 exit, into downtown Bangor. And here on Mount Desert Island they are still quite strong. It used to be when I adjusted my FM Rabbit Ears Antenna Northward WSYY came in, when I shifted them West WHOM would come in. Now it's just WHOM.
