Mainstream Christmas Music

Figured I might start a thread where we try to assemble the best 'must have' Christmas music for mainstream CHR. I'll post my list later this evening. Please post your favorites...

I probably sound like Scrooge and the Grinch but I don't think Christmas music should be played on any CHRs or Hot ACs. If somebody like Bieber puts out a new holiday song then maybe, but I don't want to hear Mariah Carey or NSync, or even older music played on a format that's about contemporary music.

As a consultant friend of mine used to say, "Don't be afraid of Santa Claus" For the most part stations that go all x-mas get a sizeable bumb in their fall ratings. Exercise some good programming skills, stick to the christmas songs that best represent your station and format and you will be fine.

it is a slippery slope.

i personally believe you can't go wrong with the standard christmas fare. holly jolly, white christmas, rocking around the christmas tree, etc. after all, our 18-34 females were youngsters at home with mom and dad once, and they remember this stuff.

the are only a few "chr type" tunes that i would play. mariah carey (best christmas song ever!), britney... no n'sync or bsb, i think they're burned.

i think the audience likes some of the comedy cuts, bob rivers, adam sandler (chanukah), little stinkers, dirty boyz.

i haven't decided if i'll do christmas this year, or leave it for the all christmas stations. if i do, here are my cuts.

primary:
bing, white christmas
jose, feliz navidad
nat, christmas song
mariah, all i want
bobby helms, jingle bell rock
brenda, rocking around the tree
john lennon, happy christmas
burl, holly jolly

secondary:
andy williams, most wonderful time
chris brown, this christmas
paul mc, wonderful christmastime
elton, step into christmas
andy williams, happy holidays/holiday season
bruce, santa claus coming to town (hard to find the CORRECT version!)
leroy anderson, sleigh ride
johnny mathis, beginning to look a lot...
john cougar mellencamp, i saw mommy
elvis, blue christmas
carpenters, merry christmas darling
beach boys, lil st nick
eurythmics, winter wonderland
eagles, please come home
waittresses, christmas wrapping
gene autry, rudolph

tertiary:
bob rivers, chimpmunks roasting
perry como, home for the holidays
little stinkers, i farted in santa's lap
kenny g, have yourself
chipmunks, christmas song
bob rivers, 12 pains of christmas
gayla peavy, i want a hippo
dean martin, let it snow
adam sandler, chanaukah song
spike jones, my 2 front teeth
johnny mathis, most wonderful time
seymour swine, blue christmas
dirty boyz, all i want for christmas
britney, my only wish
madonna, santa baby
trans siberian, christmas eve
bandaid, do they know

your thoughts/flames expected and welcome.

I only disagree on NSYNC "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays" just as in most NSYNC songs it's basically just a Justin Timberlake record and has always been a top holiday request for us. As well as Lou Monte's Dominick the Donkey and in more recent years Lady Gaga's Christmas Tree.

i see your point on justin timberlake/n'sync. i forgot about dominick and gaga.

i like christmas dragnet and cheech and chong santa and his old lady, but i suspect they're way too dated for the chr audience. i'm not playing christmas shoes period. lol

a few more possibles are celebrate me home, kenny l ... the real slim santa... christina the christmas song ... where are you christmas, faith hill ... grandma got run over (LIMITED)...father christmas, elp... eartha kitt santa baby ... bob and doug 12 days.. kip adota i saw daddy kissing santa claus...

Don't forget:

Marshmallow World - Dean Martin
We Need A Little Christmas - Percy Faith
When My Heart Finds Christmas - Harry Connick Jr.

Today on Clear Channel's premium choice Hit Nation they played "Holly Jolly Christmas" Burl Ives and "Jingle Bell Rock". Bobby Helms sounded so out of place between Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran.

CHR not going all-Christmas is precisely the reason I do not listen in December. A lot of those are good choices, although I would use the Elvis version of Blue Christmas. You forgot about the version of Frosty the Snowman that is used in the movie. The thing that really gets me is that the station that carries Bob Rivers does not play any of his songs in even light rotation as far as I know.

i did list elvis' blue christmas. it's in secondaries.

as for frosty, i can't find a proper version of that song. i hate that "happy birthday" part. lol

Where's Wham's Last Christmas? I would think it would be a primary seeing as though it seems to get played all the time during the holidays.

Actually the Glee Cast version version of that one is my favorite. Here are a few of my aditions,
Josh Groban - Believe
Peanuts Gang - Christmas Time Is Here surprised there hasn't been a mention of this one yet.

We play the Taylor Swift version of Last Christmas.

Of all the songs mentioned in this thread this would be the most appropriate for a CHR format. Maybe the Lady Gaga song too…
