majic 98.5

Hunter Herring is out @ Majic 98.5/WOMG due to the budget ax. TJ McKay is doing afternoon drive.

Wow, what a bad firing by WOMG. Herring, with his forty years of experience in the Columbia market and around the Carolinas, and eighteen years at WOMG. He was about the only one left from when the station was on 1320 AM (now WISW).

A lot of people will miss him around the state, as he was a great personality, with lots of local presence and a good presentation.

People will be very mad after they hear about this.

Since this has happened, it makes me wonder who is going to do mid-days now since Doug Enlow is no longer doing it.

my understanding is Scott as in Scott Studios will be handling Mid-Days. :-X

WOW! I understand budget cuts...but, WOW! Hunter's a legend, right up there with Woody & Leo. I was a snot nosed newbie USC freshman from Hartsville when he gave me my first Columbia job in 1980. Position 14. WCOS. Hunter is a DJ's DJ. "Hang in there, Boogie!"

I definitely agree about him being a legend in this town and frankly he has not been at too many stations over the years and I remember him from when I was a kid growing up here in Columbia and listening to him and Woody on WCOSS 1400. Those were the good old days and it makes me wonder if they are going to get rid of Woody too.

Given the Fox's dip in ratings I would hire Hunter on the Fox in the afternoons bump Alice Cooper and let Weird Beird dominate 7-12 again. Wonder if Dave will take advantage of this chance to get the Fox's number's up? One can only hope.

That's too bad about Doug and now Hunter gone from 'OMG. They were two of my favorite jocks in the market. I hope Woody hangs on...they'll probably (well, hopefully) keep him for now, since they've already gotten rid of two of their great jocks. Shame.

BTW, almost in Ftn. Inn today I picked up WWNQ 94.3 fairly well for a few minutes. Thought that was pretty neat. The Christmas tunes were rolling..

I don't think they will get rid of Woody. He's generating revenue by selling his own show. I predict this will be the station's lineup for the forseeable future: Woody, Automation, TJ, Syndication, Automation. What a shame. The economy is eating a big #*#* sandwich that radio has been eating for years.

You could very well be right. I really hate seeing automation in the mid-days but most stations tend to track during this time slot too and I am afraid that terresterial radio did not get on the digital bandwagon soon enough too.

Is the digital bandwagon comment tongue-in-cheek? If not, how on earth would the digital thing help? Programming is the answer. DIFFERENT programming! Not cookie cutter same-thing-everyone-else-does. Now, where's that liner card......?

I'm gonna tell you where the real problem lies. Any of you true early radio jocks like myself will agee. Remember the days when a jock did their show with their own personality, not liner cards and off air YOU visited your clients and did the sales calls. You also interacted with your audience and it was real. Now you have "sales people' still employed while the jocks (the one people hear and relate to) get axed. Kind of seems like sitting in the wagon waiting to roll after you just shot the horse. Where are the priorities and when is someone with control going to finally stand up and try something different that will appeal to the listener which we ONCE catered to?

That is why Woody Windham is still so popular here in Columbia. When other announcers have been let go by Citadel, they will not be letting him go anytime soon because he brings in his own advertisers and they would go with him if he were shown the door and frankly he is one of the most popular announcers here in the area and loves the oldies because that is what he has been doing around here for the last 40 years or so.

Sounds like corporate radio to me. I miss the old days with locally owned radio.

On air, sales calls, no liners, actually meeting and greeting listeners. Sounds familiar to me. ;)

I was referring to VAPMAN's post. Some of us still do an air shift and make personal calls on clients... and don't read liner cards.

LOL! It should, Steve, since you're blazing the trail back to the future with WXRY. There's a station in St. Marten, Island 92, that does the same thing and their jocks are stars...not just to the listeners, but to the advertisers as well. You've got the train rolling in the right direction for the times, bro, let's just get it blasting down the tracks at a fair clip.

Maybe with the vision of broadcasters like you and others, the return of the "personal touch" may be making a return to contemprorary terrestrial radio.

But, as a fantasy footballer, Steve, you are a great broadcaster.

Happy Holidays, my brother and to all of you.

Other big changes are coming to Columbia's Citadel bunch. The clock is ticking and they are overstaffed if not overpaid.

I disagree 89. Citadel is appropriately staffed. The problem lies with Citadel corporate who may try to reduce costs by gutting the place. That would be a mistake. But when you are one of the cash cows in the chain, there is a lot of pressure to increase the profits paid to the mothership even more.. even if it means screwing up the product.
