Majic becomes Magic

Another website reports that Majic has changed the spelling to a more conventional "Magic" while the new PD has reassigned airshifts and added more classic rock tracks. I'm sure the metro's 2.1 million Hispanics will be overjoyed... a lot more rock material is just what was needed.

The logo has, in a stroke of extreme originality, a flamingo on it.

Check their website out: http://www.majic1027.com/ It's changed more than the station, IMO.
You can click on "more songs we just played". I've been listening and aside
from new jingles and slogans it doesn't sound very different, at least not yet.
And they now have Vance and Mindy for the morning drive. I got burned out
on SHE and usually have Magic on when I listen to the radio.

They've really broadened their playlist, which is always a good thing in my opinion. Plus they're using the same imagine that KLOU uses up here in St. Louis for their successful oldies station which is kinda cool to me as well.

Just noticed the top of the hour ID still uses the old imaging...which was kinda weird.

For listeners who enjoy a retro format, they should be happy Magic continues to be given new lifelines. In other markets and with other owners and management, the plug would have probably been pulled long ago. Beyond all that, the question remains if Magic has found a niche in what is becoming a more crowded older adult field. Personally, I have a feeling more changes are to come. Over the past year or so, I've made the switch to WFEZ. They have an identity and even where I live, they make me feel I'm in South Florida. Magic needs to sound like a South Florida station too - if they want to increase their numbers.

The ethnic diversity of the market, I believe, helps bring radio to another level. I love South Florida radio because it seems to march to a different beat. Here I agree totally with David Eduardo. For a very long time, the old "Majic" incorporated rhythmic elements into the playlist such as Motown, the disco divas, and higher energy type tunes. Their strategy seems to have dropped most of that in favor of heavier titles. Musically, they have gotten a bit more focused but there is still unevenness especially when they go to an album cut rocker more appropriate for a classic rock station.

I wouldn't expect Magic to sound like the Coast's former retro weekend but IMHO they have been handed a gift. There are many displaced weekend Coast listeners today. If you look at Sunny in Orlando - a community with a growing Hispanic population, they seemed to have nailed it. There's plenty of traditional oldies/hybrid titles but they cleverly interweave some rhythmic elements too and it seems to work very well. I'd like Magic to find that sweet spot too. True, Miami has lots of rhythmic choices and I'm not saying Magic should be another clone of them. I'm just saying Donna Summer, as an example, would do a better job conveying "Miami's Greatest Hits" than a Boston album cut one would find on a classic rocker. They still have way too many burned out 60's tunes. I'm not saying to get rid of them entirely but to feature them occasionally or more along special programming etc.

As far as the talent goes, Magic certainly has many with a very long track record. Should Ron St. John decide to hang up the headphones, I'd like to see Magic add someone who has a track record in South Florida and who has a Hispanic surname. It's all about being responsive to the audience. At any rate, maybe the new PD will turn things around. I hope he is successful. Magic is a heritage station and they are very lucky to be given yet another chance.

Hey Guys:

Would anybody know the birthday of when Majic (OH Sorry) Magic became "Good Times Great Oldies"? How old would they be today?

My opinion: I think it should go back to that great oldies format it had. I am hearing too many songs I can hear on other stations.

thanks

T.J

Looking at the latest playlist it seems that more rhythmic product has been added.

There was a thread on here about this. Actually it was more of a 96X/K-102 thread that lead into Majic.

BUMP! ;D

American Top 40: The 70's with Casey Kasem has been moved back from 10 AM-1 PM, to
7 AM-10 AM, with Beatles Brunch moving ahead from 9 to 10 AM. I spoke with Joe Johnson
this week on the phone, and he said the first half of AT40 has too many obscure songs,
and artists like Anne Murray and the Carpenters who don't fit on the station. Some of the
songs he said he's never heard of, even though he's been on the radio for 35 years. I wonder
if they'll keep Casey.

Tom Kent has a "live" request show each weeknight at 10 PM. But the songs are all listed
in advance on his online logs. I don't think they are all Magic listeners calling in, but he
makes it sound like they are.
