Majic's New Morning Show

I would have thought by this time, we would have heard something official. My understanding is Rick Shaw has a vacation planned for February and wanted to be retired by then. February is right around the corner.

And so I guess the possibilities are:

1. A replacement has indeed been found but the official announcement has not been made
2. A replacement has been chosen but contractual obligations prevent a current/soon start date.
3. Joe Johnson will take over the show soon until a permanent replacement is made.

Thoughts? Still any possibility it can be Bill Tanner?

I haven't heard anything in the local media recently regarding the eventual final radio broadcast of the legendary Rick Shaw, and a quick surf of MAJIC's web site showed no mention of his retirement. His morning show is still going strong, and (on the web site) it's as if Rick & Donna plan to continue the show indefinitely.

So here's Possibility # 4:

No replacement has yet been found or chosen (possibly intentionally) by MAJIC Management, and the legendary Rick Shaw has agreed to stay put until this has been done. The legendary 'Footy' has not been available for comment despite the occasional rumour that suggests that he may have been considered or even selected as the new morning show host.

Perhaps possibility #5 would be played out where $$$ strictly dictates and they get someone internally like Joe Johnson to take over the morning show.

I can just see the promotion now, we looked high and low, but there's nothing like Majic talent...and you can fill in the rest.

I never thought of Footy going on to Majic but there are significant numbers of people who are not only familiar with him but who grew up with him and at least from a target audience perspective - he would seem to be a good fit. Not be a far-fetched idea for sure.

Let me put it this way. After talking to Footy at length, in my opinion, he's enjoying his non-radio life like never before. I seriously doubt he'd even entertain the thought at this stage in the game. It may be difficult for some who've never been in the business to understand, but once you leave it, you open a whole new world & your views change.

Don't get me wrong, it stays in your blood, keep in touch with a few and sometimes you miss it, but over all, if you're a long timer, enjoyed the days of when & then you walk away, it's usually for good. [color]

When legendary radio personalities who have worked in the biz for 30+ (Footy), 40+, or 50 years (Rick Shaw) retire do they receive any type of retirement pay or other associated benefits for life (such as medical) in any capacity, or is it more along the lines of 'Thank you for your many fine years of excellent service, and good luck with the rest of your life' ?

You have got to be kidding right?

If you managed to work for a group like Storer, Jefferson-Pilot, or Cox for 10-15 years you would be fully vested in the pension plan... That's about it!

NO - I'm not kidding. I'm genuinely interested in this. I've always wondered if longtime radio deejays who retire (don't quit or get fired) actually receive retirement benefits (a la the military) from the corporation that they worked for. I'm one of the many on here that has never been 'in the biz'.

That sounds like an excellent deal after 10 or 15 years ! That's much better than I ever imagined !

Putting it bluntly, when you're gone, YOU'RE GONE! I have never heard of any station doing that, or for that matter any long time announcer having received any form of continued support from a company.

You pretty much get the complimentary in on concerts or station events (but still have to pay face value, it's just a heads up on something you may want to attend.), but other than that, the loyalty you gave them as an employee no longer matters to them (because you don't work for them anymore), unless of course, they need you for something, and in that case, they'll compensate you in some way, but it's usually nothing to jump up and down for.

Years ago or in todays broadcast world, that is the one thing that has never changed. Time spent working for a broadcast company only means something while you're doing it. When you leave, you no longer exist. It's just another of the fine missing perks in a fine business.

Well that sounds more realistic (unfortunately). After the previous response I was starting to think that Footy had received a luxurious retirement package from Clear Channel, and so that is why he would never take the morning show host job over at MAJIC (once Rick Shaw retires) ... which brings us back 360 to the original topic of this exciting thread.

See how I did that ? I'm good ! ::)

THE MAJOR - ALWAYS ON-TOPIC !

The trick is you have to work for the same company for 10-15 years and that's something that only a few DJ's have ever managed to do! Cox and Storer had that (I didn't last long enough with either one to even become partially vested) but I doubt anyone offers that anymore. Most have gone the usual 401K route.

All this talk of benefits and loyalty to a station/corporation made me think of another spin on this in keeping with the original thought of this thread.

If there is talent from the past who perhaps had "difficulty" with even the previous management or went on to burn bridges, is it possible they can be under consideration for a position at the same station or do they just screw themselves for good?

Case in point would be a Greg Budell. He would be a natural in taking over for Rick and in some ways it would indeed be like passing the torch. If we assume Greg was available and was interested, would Majic consider him? I'm not sure what exactly happened the first time Greg was with Majic but that was with Jefferson Pilot I believe. The company has changed but I'm wondering if that even matters in the radio world. I guess if there are specific examples where talent was fired from the station or left on their own not happy campers, do they get hired back?

Actually, you might remember Budell did make a comeback in the Jefferson-Pilot building from 2001-03 as morning news anchor across the hall at 101.5 LITE FM (though he was, technically, an employee of Metro Networks during that period). Greg's tenure doing evenings at MAJIC was for the previous owner, Sconnix.

Regarding the current MAJIC morning show vacancy -- Greg is reportedly very happy with his situation in Montgomery, Alabama, and enjoying his work there at Alice 96.1 -- working for another former boss, Rick Peters (who used to program both Love 94 and MAJIC).

Word in the streets is it definitely will not be Footy.

No firm date was ever announced by Majic as to when the replacement would start. Even if Shaw does have a vacation planned in February, it's no sweat for him to push it back. After all, retirment is somewhat of a "permanant" vacation, isn't it?

I'm hearing that a couple of viable candidates are on the short list. Nobody from South Florida, but talented in their own right. Could be announced as soon as February, but me thinks that Majic will take more time if need be. I would look for the new team to definitely be in place in time for the Spring book.

That's what I'm hearing anyway.

Well, some things we already know is Majic's PD worked in California radio and is usually the case, it comes down who you know and/or worked with in the past.

Mr. Goss apparently works the classic hits format so that part would seem logical too. If it pans out, I guess everyone deserves a chance to shine.

But then there is a part of me who recalls so many great people who graced the South Florida airwaves from a couple decades ago that I would have loved to have heard again. I've even thought of Stuart Elliott in that role too. To me, Mr. Elliott always did his homework and that's critical to a morning show.

Anyway, I found this website for Mr. Goss you may find interesting. www.gossradio.com
