MAJOR ANCHOR SHAKE-UP AT WCAU NBC 10?

From today's Laura Nachman article. Shocked that the DN and Inquirer didn't pick this news up yet:
According to newsroom insiders, shortly after NBC announced cutbacks and layoffs, Dennis Bianchi, general manager of the Philadelphia affiliate, NBC10, held a meeting where he said that the station may be making changes to its news lineup.

I'm also surprised that the Inquirer or Daily News hasn't printed this either.

Julius: What are YOUR thoughts on this possible anchor "shake up?" Does you think it will improve the newscasts or not? Does you watch Ennn Bee See 10 Snooze? Or another channel? Why or why not?

Julius, thank you for the wonderful summary of the article, wait. Nevermind.

I think KYW's relaunch was the beginning of the end for NBC10. I cant for the life of me tell you why I watch 3 over 10. At 4 oclock the choice is KYW and any other time it's 6 (ohh big bad six, ground into me as the *only*sation to watch), occasionally flipping to 3.

As for the potential news shakeup, it will be one big nail in their coffin. People have been watching their station for news, and if they go flipping the newscasts to those themed-shows, the channels will flip right to one of the other available newscasts. Also, FOX29's 5 o'clock newscast (if it ever 'effing happens) is something i expect to hurt NBC10 too.

And how about everyone shares their opinion on the topic, instead of posting just to get a jab in?

Nobody is "jabbing" at anyone. The author of the thread rarely ever contributes to the threads he starts. He just posts links to newspapers, but doesn't give his own opinions about the subject at hand. I've always stated that the author should give his own opinions as well...that's how conversations get started...thus the purpose of this forum. I will continue to feel this way as long as the silly behavior of posting just for the sake of posting continues day in and day out.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of Enn Bee See 10 Snooze. I don't think this supposed "anchor shake up" will do any good. I really don't see how anyone can tolerate watching them. I don't know what it is...there is something about the newscasts I don't like...I just can't piece it together! (I have the same opinion of WJAR Channel 10 in Providence...I can't stand watching them!) The WCAU Corporate Stiff Neks care changing things just to cater to 30 Rock's demands to cut budgets. Laura's article pretty much says it all. They are finding any way possible to cut corners...and give in to the Penny Pinching Puppets at 30 Rock. I read a rumor somewhere that NBC was considering selling some of their satellite trucks...just to save money.

I don't have to give opinions. As long as everyone sees the news and talk about it, that's all I care about, enough about me, let's get back to the topic at hand here.

I'm shocked that this might happen to a major market station like WCAU. The viewers are so used to watching news on WCAU at 4 and 5 for the past few years. Quoting from Nachman's article
The possible plans mentioned include making the 4 p.m. news, currently co-anchored by Renee Chenault-Fattah and Tim Lake, a consumer oriented news hour anchored by Tracy Davidson. The 5 p.m. show, currently co-anchored by Davidson and Vince DeMentri will become an issues-oriented news show anchored solo by DeMentri. The 6 p.m. show, currently co-anchored by Chenault-Fattah and Lake will be anchored alone by Lake, and the 11 p.m. show, currently co-anchored by Chenault-Fattah and Lake would be anchored solo by Chenault-Fattah.
I guess their decline in their ratings may have something to do with this and the fact that WCAU's newscasts are not good as they once were in terms of quality and how the newscast is presented by the anchors. I kind of whished that some of these anchors would not be on the station anymore in my opinion. I hope this is not the beginning of the end of local newscasts of WCAU.

I doubt local news will completely go away from NBC10 if they do what is talked about to the newscasts. They might just be severly cut back. Their MyPHL17-cast could be in question. I dont know how much it is of a hassle for them to do that newscast since their already there, but that newscast could go.

Agree, WPHL should go back to what they aired in that slot in 1994, a sitcom.

Toby: Amen to that!!!! You are so right!!!

As far as Julius' suggestion that WPHL should air sitcoms at 10:00, that may not be a bad idea. Their news ratings have never been that great, but some people were watching. However, most viewers tend to watch Fox 29 at 10:00. I'm not saying WPHL is a "bad station" or any other silly comment, but it seems the 10:00 news thing is simply not working out. Julius, thank you for providing your own insight on this topic. Keep it up.

I believe that Tribune mandates their stations to do news, either having their own news department or farming it out.

Not true. WDCW 50, Washington DC, has no newscast.

I think if Tribune is bought out, certain stations, including WPHL, will be divested. Or, atleast the new owners will try to sell off some stations. NBC should own 17. Of course, NBC wouldn't want to spend much as WPHL wouldn't be THAT great of an asset, and NBC is looking to make 'cuts' in their operations. But there are still synergies of duopoly.

It would also secure NBC 10 News presence on WPHL 17 at 10PM, as NBC would reap full profits of it. I'd hope a new owner of WPHL would keep The Tube. NBC could use the other WPHL digital subchannels for ShopNBC and Telemundo. The over-the-air Telemundo signal of WWSI doesn't cover Philadelphia.

It would be a similar scenario as WHDH 7 (NBC) in Boston buying out WLVI 56 - and in doing so, the station can compete for a 10PM news audience against the Fox station in the market.

Sitcoms at 10pm might be lucrative, but I think TBS and Lifetime already run several of the same shows like 'Friends' and 'Will & Grace' several times in the day. Also, If 17 placed a sitcom at 10, it would just take away from what they would have aired at 6:30, 7 or 11. Then one of those slots would just be placed w/ a weaker lower rated show, like 'Just Shoot Me' - not giving much of an increase in ratings for the station.

Back in the 90s, I don't recall 17 or 57 running sitcoms at 10pm - atleast not usually. I think 57 ran shows like Matlock or Star Trek, while 17 ran shows like Highway Patrol, LAPD, Studs, or Love Connection. Sitcoms, esp. the better ones, were reserved for an hour later.

The only time I really watch NBC-10 news is on the weekends. I am usually at work in the morning, and it is on before and after "The Today Show". John Blunt has been there for as long as I can remember (familiarity factor), and I tend to find Earthwatch to be the most dependable, in my opinion. Speaking of their morning news team, I noticed that Aditi Roy has been in for Denise Nakano? Did Denise have a baby, or is it part of the shake-up?

The evening newscast seems to have a nice flow to it, with Lauren, Amy, and John. The energy level they portray seems to be both positive and energetic. (Yes, I think that Lauren Cohn is cute, but that is not the sole reason why I watch NBC-10 News at 6.)

Denise Nakano is anchoring the MY PHL 17 newscast Monday-Friday
