Major Blunder at 920-ESPN radio

as i am writing this. . .all of the sudden in Overtime. . .WPHY-Trenton 920-ESPN radio at exactly 12:40 A.M. switched from the Westwood One NCAA basketball feed to the national ESPN radio feed. were their computers on a timer. what a way to blow it. reminds of N.Y. Jets vs. Oakland. . .Heidi game. someone at 920-ESPN. . .wake up. you just cut off one of the most exciting games in this year's tournament.

Re: Major Blunder at 920-ESPN radio - Westwood One SUCKS

Let me tell you about Westwood One ... their automation
SUCKS big time - and it is very difficult to get a game
to run smoothly. It's not the stations fault.
Complain to Westwood One (not that it would help)
because they need to fix their system. They rely on
25 Hz and 35 Hz tones - and the crowd noise and
anything else falses even the best of decoders.
There are many better ways to do it, and they don't
bother to improve and make it reliable.
Did I mention Westwood One SUCKS ? If they are
reading this, they can contact me at the email in my
profile and I'll help get it right. As it is now,
the end of the games is hit or miss. Don't blame
the station.

I'll bet a live board-op wouldn't be fooled by crowd noise or errant tones.

Nope - because he would be:

late for work
asleep
smoking pot
locked outside because he forgot the key
not paying attention
home, because he called out sick
watching TV
doing homework
reading a book with the monitor down
getting laid on the floor
getting laid on the console
letting friends in to hang out
being clueless
outside smoking a cigarette
in the bathroom
eating pizza with the monitor down
snooping around the offices
making copies of his resume
taking toilet paper out to his car
listening to another station
hitting on the call screener
looking at porn on the Internet
chatting with friends on AIM

Board Op = Slacker

You forgot to add: Moderating a radio board.

Hitting on a call screener? No local call-in shows. What do they need a call screener for?

You have described a slacker. Slackers don't have sex. Jocks have sex. Musicians have sex. Even guys going to law school, medical school or B-school have sex (money works). Slackers are board oping because they can't get laid.

You don't hire people to train them; you hire people because they are trained.

Atleast we have an idea of what Tom DOES while he executes an air-shift! Although I imagine some of the above would be a s t r e t c h

Oh - let me add one just for you:

continue anonymous personal vendetta against someone
who doesn't hide behind a handle on a message board

Re: Board Op = Slacker

Not true - many, many hours are spent training people
at NJ stations. They have to have a desire to learn.

Re: Major Blunder at 920-ESPN radio - Westwood One SUCKS

The door is always open for those who have a desire
to learn. Many hours have been spent teaching
people who have gone on to good jobs, or enjoy
radio as a hobby, and work in other fields.

No offense Tom, but I'm guilty of about (counts) <strike>five</strike> seven of those offenses and I STILL ran a tight board.

...on the CONSOLE? Wouldn't that be uncomfortable?

Re: Major Blunder at 920-ESPN radio - Westwood One SUCKS

Good job ! By "the console" I meant the furniture,
not right on the board. Those pesky pots hurt.

I'm gonna have to agree with you Tom. Westwood One does suck. One time I was board-oping a NCAA Pre-Game from Westwood One. (This was at a station in Suburban Hartford) I had a sheet that told me which breaks were supposed to be local and what breaks were supposed to be network and what the out-cues were supposed to be. And guess what? The idiot from Westwood One Screwed up the Out-Cues and I finished playing all the local spots before the Pre-Game was over. I told the GM that Westwood One Screwed up and he told me to just let the network spots air instead of local spots.

LOL! I wish I had a job as a board op here in Jersey! I did run the board one summer at a Houston station (my dad was/is the morning guy and taught me very well how to run a board).

And I can tell you, the only computer screen I was looking at was either the VoxPro or Maestro. <P ID="signature">______________

Re: Major Blunder at 920-ESPN radio - Westwood One SUCKS

Once I was visiting a friend on mine who was a DJ at an AM Urban Station in Suburban Hartford. He started the song on the turntable and turned the monitor off and he went to use the restroom. I went out to the lobby and sat down on the aptly named love seat.

Then the guy who hosts the Italian show comes in the front door of the station looking for the GM, who isn't there. He asks me who's running the station? And I told him that the DJ was in the bathroom, and I ask him what's wrong? And he tells me the record is playing over the air at a much too fast speed. My friend could hear us and he came running out of the bathroom, pants still down around his ankles and ran into the studio. He ripped the record off the turntable and spent five minutes trying to find the CD with the same song on it. That's right. 5 Minutes of dead air. The Italian show host then cusses my friend out in Italian. Of course my friend doesn't understand what he's saying because my friend speaks English and Spanish.

On a previous visit to this station to see my friend when it was a Spanish station I walked in the front door to see him and his girlfriend doing the nasty on the love seat. Later on during that same visit I walked into the studio to find him and his girlfriend doing the nasty underneath the console.

I second that...(or is it 3rd?)....Nothing like trying to run Jim Bohannan's America in the Morning on WW1 at 5am while trying to MANUALLY count the bee-doops since they couldnt send a reliable 20/30 signal....all while half asleep.<P ID="signature">______________
