Major Boston AM Station Reviews/Opinions

First up: WRKO, in spite of the fact that there are listeners on WEZE (590), it's just not a major station.

WRKO - thumbs just somewhat up, thanks entirely to Rush, Howie, the Red Sox and Savage. If Tommy Taxes can take advantage of 'TKK's much weaker position with Barnicle (who's more likely to cause fatal car accidents due to drivers falling asleep) the thumbs will be much higher
WJIB - big thumbs up to our friend JIBGUY (Bob Bittner), both for his listener-supported standards format and his getting excellent ratings for a tiny signal
WEEI - thumbs down - I haven't heard much of their daily KKK meetings (otherwise known as the Dennis and Callahan show), but from all I've read (ratings, D&C negotiations, Callahan's throat illness) things don't look promising; I'm not even sure that their afternoon Klan rally (the Big Show) is even #1 with adults anymore
ESPN Radio Boston (890) - does almost as well with their small signal as JIBGUY's WJIB does with standards; I guess that Felger's the only one getting ratings (people getting tired of WEEI's afternoon KKK act)
WBZ - big thumbs up, in spite of losing the retired Gary LaPierre for the relatively unknown Ed Walsh. Also for perservering through Sully's illness (hopefully he comes back soon) and bad B's games. Yes, Traffic On The 3s is a little old, but it works - big boxcar #s overall, and likely boxcar adult #s as well
WILD - so totally dropped off the list (I'm amazed they still have any listeners)

Well that's it! Enjoy the rest of this spring (which ends next Wednesday night)! ;D

People listen to WILD ,only for The Tom Joyner morning Show ( to get there Urban A/C fix ) and thats it . Tom Joyner Suck ,but his Urban A/C music is good . No One Want to hear" Cry Baby Al Sharton Show".

Please know that I DO INDEED appreciate your enthusiasm for radio.
However, I think in the future, it would be better (in my opinion, anyway) if you could keep all of your reviews in a single thread.

Thanks,
Keep up the good work.

I agree with you about WRKO but I don't think WEEI is KKK headquarters...heck, if they WERE racist would
they even let M. Holley in the building? There was the metco incident but that was the exception rather
than the rule.

You lost me with all the KKK garbage. As was pointed out, Michael Holley is a part of the daytime duo and the Big Show often has black guests.

So the question is, what's your agenda. You skipped 890 ESPN. Are you a plant for them?

And Part-Time Larry Johnson ( Black man ) is on WEEI , and Everett and Jamaine ( Regular WEEI Callers ) sometime's does a show on WEEI .

Not to pile on, I don't think you can call WEEI's afternoon shows "KKK" radio. The morning guys are more controversial when it comes to pushing the envelope in regards to race than are the afternoon hosts.

You forgot to list WMKI 1250 (Radio Disney)! I think it's pretty good, but I wish they would be more like they were in the early days, and play more old school stuff, like Sesame Street!

As a southern NH resident, the only Boston AM station I can rely on in the winter is WBZ thanks to its 50k signal. The others are awful in the winter, before the sun comes up and after it goes down. WBZ has chased me away with ad clutter, even to the point where their 'Top-of-the-hour' newscast sometimes comes on at 1 minute past the hour because of all the ads they try to cram in. That's inexcusable, so I tune them out. Everything has a sponsor; sometimes it's something stupid like 'Your New England Subaru Traffic on the Threes, brought to you by Purina cat Chow.' Don't bludgeon me with ads and then expect me to listen. IPod-1, WBZ-0.

WEEI and WRKO are my only other stations on AM. But my iPod is ruling the day now, and has for months. WEEI has lost its voice (literally and figuratively), and I have no patience for John MeatPuppet or whatever his name is. He sounds inane and looks worse; like Eddie Munster. I'll listen to WRKO in the evenings with Howie...that is, whenever they aren't fiddling and diddling with the Red Sox. That whole thing with the Red Sox has confused me and many others into simply refusing to tune WRKO in. That, plus 'Tommy Tune Out' doing the mornings. I refuse to subsidize that bleeding Liberal, so I happily do not.

Believe me, I share your frustration about WBZ's ad clutter (don't get me started about the Sox radio and TV coverage which are cluttered past the point of stupidity) and I own an Ipod myself. But...can your Ipod give you the weather, the latest BS from presidential hopefuls, or any other kind of news?
I score it Ipod 1, WBZ 1, XM 3, NESN 0.

No, true enough: My iPod can't give me the weather. But, WBZ (to their credit) tells me when the weather will be on so I can avoid the advertising that sandwiches it. As for the latest BS from the presidential hopefuls, well, you can't be serious about WANTING to hear all that, are you?

I have never succumbed to XM, simply because (in my view) my commute isn't long enough to make it worthwhile. It's barely a half-hour. If I had an hour or more each way each day, I'd probably have it. But I do have to say that I really like the iTunes Podcast library, and I subscribe to several that download daily. That and satellite radio are the things that commercial stations battle, and they have no one but themselves to blame for any leakage in listenership that occurs.

Not me personally, but it was an example of something topical that only commercial broadcasting provides. My commute is 75-90 minutes one way, and XM makes it far more bearable.

I agree with you completely about 740 WJIB. I remember that station used to be on 96.9 waaaay back in the day. I've recently 'rediscovered' JIB, and like what I hear. Well done Bob.
