This is based far more on ratings than on MPHO
92-5/The River - thumbs up north of Mass Pike; just one of 7 contemporary rock stations
92-9 WBOS - thumbs down, given its good signal coverage with an almost carbon copy of the River; both play a lot of music heard on 5 other rock stations
93-7/Mike FM - thumbs down, since it takes up a format which is overdone - I mean 3 stations with a mostly Aero, Zep, U2, AC/DC, Hendrix diet? OVERKILL!
Jam'n 94-5 - thumbs up, even though I personally don't like rap (unless it's Sugarhill Gang, Run-DMC and Grandmaster Flash); I'm shocked people my age like it though
96-9/FM Talk - thumbs way down, since Imus' forced exit will likely lead to a massive exodus, even affecting top dog Severin(o)
Mix 98-5 - thumbs definitely down, given that most of its music (outside of Friday night) can be heard on 'BOS, River, and 4 other stations already - I like some of the old stuff, but it's ill-fitted for an AC station; belongs on rock instead
WPLM/Easy 99.1 - thumbs somewhat down due to small but steady influx of what I (a social conservative) consider edgy music (hey, if it was on 'BCN, it counts as edgy to me)
Classical 99.5 WCRB - thumbs up - proof that most of 'CRB's listeners (especially north of the Mass Pike) knew enough to follow; as one who's not a close follower of classical as I am of disco, I can't tell if it's a narrow playlist; however, older demos may play into 'CRB's future
WZLX 100.7 - thumbs up - I stand by what I said about 'ZLX being America's first classic rock station, especially since WYSP was copying WCOZ song for song; with 3 classic rockers (which all play the above listed plus Mac, Eagles, Elton, Joel, BTO, ELO, Cars, Boston, etc.) I think 'ZLX slowly rising back in top 10 is good
101.7 WFNX - thumbs up, even though it plays most of the same rock as Mix, 'BOS, and other stations; like Mix, 'FNX does know that alt-rock's true roots are the B-52's, Police, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, Squeeze - NOT Led Zeppelin
Country 102.5/WKLB - thumbs up, although according to my 15-year-old niece, it plays too much classic rock covers to make her totally happy; she is a huge Carrie Underwood fan though
Oldies 103 (OK, 103.3) - ????? - my big question - are people who love classic disco such as myself aged out of the demo? I'm 44, and I don't think so. Anyhow, Oldies (or whatever it becomes) needs to steer clear of 'ZLX territory (i.e. Aero, VH, AC/DC, Zep, etc.) and needs to play lots of 80s dance hits (that's the only type of music which adequately connects the 70s to the 80s musically)
WBCN - thumbs down - needs to focus on its rock music or get out and give Jam'n real competition (and give 'ZLX the Pats as well as the B's) - should not be stepping that much into 'ZLX territory anyway, and just how the hell is alt-rock - which is a category out of new wave punk clubs - related to big-time arena rock (Led Zep, Boston, Aero)?
WROR - thumbs up for both Loren and Wally and for its #1 status as Boston's top classic rock station
Magic 106.7 - thumbs up, even though (based on its commercials) they seem to be getting edgy recently, namely The Fray (a 'BCN group), Journey (if Magic plays Open Arms, odds are they're playing Any Way You Want It as well) and the Cranberries (another 'BCN group)
WAAF - thumbs down, especially given that its two towers aren't giving 'AAF any more listeners - in fact they're losing listeners. If indeed they are playing classics before 1990, they need to give the pre-1990 stuff over to Mike-FM so that 'AAFs don't lose young listeners who don't want to listen to their parents' music (Aerosmith, Zeppelin, Floyd, Hendrix); FWIW IMHO 'AAF should have kept the Paxton tower
Kiss 108 - thumbs up in spite of playing music which is decidedly non-Kiss music (i.e. The Fray, Hinder, Nickelback, Linkin Park and any other screaming rockers which you can't dance to anyway); I asked someone 40+ why she stills listens to Kiss 108, given its rock edge - she said it was Matty - period
Next up - Boston'a major AMs (should be a shorter list)
