For more info: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061015/ap_on_re_us/hawaii_earth quake I would like to know which TV/Radio stations are on the air right in the state now and has the best coverage of this event? KSSK AM/FM is on the air right now http://www.ksskradio.com/main.html and KITV is also on the air http://www.thehawaiichannel.com/video/4324656/index.html

I was sitting in the Honolulu Airport when the quake hit. I didn't have a portable radio on me, but I did have a portable battery-operated TV. The only station on-air immediately following the quake was KFVE - and they were running informercials, followed by a real estate show, followed by religion, followed by a football game. There was NOTHING about the quake, not even a crawl. At some point in the late morning hours, KIKU/Ch. 20, the all-Japanese station came back on air. Somebody there had the foresight to run a crawl in English. None of the other stations were on the air. Feeding the cable and streaming on the Internet is USELESS when the power is out. You'd think in a hurricane-prone market like Honolulu, the major stations would have back-up plans in place to keep their transmitters on air.

I understand KSSK did an outstanding job. Kudos to Paul and the crew.

I was in Hilo when the quake hit. It was a wild ride, for sure. No real damage on the Hilo side. I was in town to repair KANO (again), and had installed earthquake bracing and structural stuff in September, so the timing was pretty good, I guess. The KONA side did not do as well, stuff was moving around pretty good, and most of the Kona FM's from Koloko were off for a few hours. Generator problems, I am told. KAPA did a great job once they came back on (power was off in Hilo for about an hour). The Pacific Radio Group studio in Hilo has a nice big generator, which took a few minutes to come up, but they were up and running in a few minutes at boththe studio and Puu Alala (transmitter site).
