Major Election News Flub

The anchor of "INN News" mispronounced House Speaker-Elect John Boehner's last name (like Frank Bonner from "WKRP In Cincinnati") three times within a one-minute story:

Note that this incarnation of "INN News" is not to be confused with the old "INN News" that was dominant on many independent stations during the 1980's. This newscast actually airs on a handful of bottom-rung television stations - and this clip proves why.

My thoughts exactly... but I think three times in a minute, no matter which way the pronunciation, shows how little homework this anchor has done.

Why post something like this?
1. Not that big a flub.
2. It's on INN. No one watches.

Seriously, what is your problem? You constantly post utter nonsense like this.

Wow, what's YOUR problem? Was this a disaster of epic proportions? No of course not but it certainly is worthy of discussion on a boarded dedicated to talking about TV. So what if it was a news network that as you allege, no one watches? It is a news network and it was a mistake (not even an isolated mistake either) by a person who fancies himself to be a news anchor. It's a mistake as a Program Director that I wouldn't accept from a first year news intern let alone someone like this guy who should have known better.

I guess it's the title of this topic, it's not really a "major" election news flub. I clicked on here thinking there was some misreporting of election returns or a studio light fell on Diane Sawyer's head. Instead it's only a mispronounciation of a name.... hardly even "major" IMO.

Yeah, I get that Kent. Agreed, it wasn't anything major. I just didn't think there was a need to personally attack the OP about this post while adding in that he "constantly post(s) utter nonsense like this".

Especially when it ain't even true either.....

As for the topic, true no one watches INN (C-SPAN probably gets more viewers than INN does). But it's also true that there's no excuse for repeatedly mispronouncing someone's name in a newscast. That not only makes you look bad but is also UNPROFESSIONAL

If he can't say the name without butchering it, he shouldn't even try to say it at all. Just call him the Speaker or something (At least that's close to being true & accurate as it's all but official now).

Just my opinion.....

Cheers :D

Trust me, I've heard much worse. INN at least writes their own stories from scratch (probably in this case someone not throwing the enunciation into the teleprompter, a very simple mistake). They probably got feedback from someone out there and won't make the mistake in the future, and it probably happened at a few stations around the country; most who aren't news junkies have never heard of Boehner in their lives and just heard of him in the last few days, so a little grace period is in order to get used to the name.

It's American News Network out of Atlanta that's the true comedy act in bad national newscasts utilized by cheapo local stations. They use nothing but the cheapest of production music (I've heard much of it on the conservative news-talk parody station in the Grand Theft Auto games!), every set they have is a blue screen, they average three name/company mispronunciations per newscast and they replay video news releases verbatim from companies without any editing to speak of. When they were on the old ILife channel before they turned into Halogen it was the most entertaining half-hour on that entire network :D.

It's an easy mistake to make, but someone from INN should have been familiar with the correct pronunciation. Still, it's better than my co-worker who today was trying to convince me that the correct German pronunciation is "BO-ner" because Schroeder is pronounced "SHRO-der". Being German myself, I assured him it was correctly "BAY-ner" and "SHRAY-der", regardless of how Americans commonly pronounce it.

I'm just not a fan of these remote newscasts. If you're going to do news, do it locally. If you don't have enough money to do local news, then don't do news. Nobody says you have to. I've seen the old guy on KXGL in Glendive MT; Montana East is not the most polished newscast, but it gets full marks for the effort. At least it's local - the guy knows what he's reporting on.
