Major Magnetic Storm Event

So what are you guys hearing???

The AM band was pretty much free of skywave signals two nights ago. Conditions a little better last night, but not by much. Even from the south.

The main thing I noticed was that two semi-local rimshots were all alone instead of being trashed by skywave signals as usual WRMN from Elgin IL on 1410 and WLBK from De Kalb, IL on 1360. An oddity was that KAAY was in, but WWL, WOAI, WBAP were all mostly, if not entirely, missing. Strange stuff. The (formerly) Mighty 1090 is usually the weakest of that bunch.

Jim Renfrew in western NY (IRCA groups.io) said he had never heard the AM band not just dead, but even some local signals were gone. His local 1590 was nothing but static. WHAM 1180 was barely audible at 50,000 watts. The antenna was NOT disconnected!! Tiny bits of auroral signals from the south (like a Spanish station on 1590) came in for a couple of minutes, then gone.

It is still mostly California AMs here. But a NEW one just now...

1330 - KGAK NM, Gallup; Navajo powwow chanting, ad in English for Fire Rock Casino in Church Rock and another commercial in Navajo language at 2034 PT 4/25/23, mixed with KWKW Los Angeles. No sign of Saskatchewan. NEW #829, 1000 watts at 978 miles.

Also noting 1380 KVSM Santa Maria (500w) way over KTKZ, KLPZ Parker AZ here and there as well. 1220 KHTS Canyon Country very strong. Very weak 1260 KMZT Beverly Hills. KSL barely in. Major aurora continues...

EDIT - On top of 1450 is KTIP Porterville CA "La Bonita" over 700 mi S. There's a talk station underneath and possibly ethnic way under.

That's very interesting. No sign of several regulars such as WHB, WLAC, and WODT, here in east Texas. KAAY is buried as it has been for months. WLW is much weaker than usual, and surprisingly no sign of WGN.

Locally, 1330 KGLD standing alone with its 77 watts from clear across town, and I can weakly hear 1450 KNET from Palestine tonight, which is rare. Thanks for the heads up, Cyberdad. I wouldn’t have even spun the dial tonight, had you not posted this thread.

Another BIG new log!

1510 - XEPBGR JAL, Guadalajara; Journey 'Separate Ways,' a Spanish song, and 'Set Fire to the Rain' Adele matching stream at miled.com, ID mentioning Miled around 2042 PT 4/25. This is new #830, only 5KW at 2,036 miles!! I can't believe it! Normally KSFN is solid but even they are lost in the Au! It's operated by the Miled newspaper.

Semi-local KYNR-1490 is all alone with hardly a trace of interference. 1440 has had KFOO (BIN) and KVON (Spanish AC) mixing on and off. 1420 KSTN Stockton all alone with The Bull. 1410 is the usual KERI Bakersfield, with Christian teaching/preaching.

Northern lights were seen a couple of nights ago as far down as 29.5N latitude, at Big Bend State Park in TX.

1480 KYOS Merced TOH ID also heard

Not much difference in observed conditions by me this morning about 90 minutes before dawn. Still strong auroral effects. But a couple of nuggets that may be worth noting....

First, Toronto. No CFZM. but CJBK was in with aa weak signal. Interesting from the standpoint of both stations being diplexed on the same tower west of Toronto,

Second: 1080. Instead of semi-local Polish-language, WNWI, I was hearing "America in the Morning". Weak, but steady. At least before it vanished just in time for 5am CDT TOH ID. "America in the Morning" fits, KRLD's schedule, so I'll tentatively assume that's what I heard. No trace of WNWI, I can probably rule out WTIC, which does not carry that program. The interesting aspect of this for me is that I haven't heard KRLD here in quite a few years.

My congrats to crain for landing a couple of new catches. I've been hoping for a couple of new ones myself during these conditions, but so far, no luck. Even the big signals from south of me have been pretty much absent, if not greatly weakened. Although this morning, both WSM and WWL were in with weak signals after having been among the missing,.

KMOX continues to be a bit of a shocker. Usually, it's strong. These last few nights, it's been barely present.

Quick check last night in Knoxville TN had WLW nowhere to be found, WCKY barely making it, and no New York clears.

In my previous report from the Central Indiana SDR, I could have mentioned the night signal of WNOP, Newport KY (740). about a half hour after sunset with no sign of CFZM or KRMG. Also Jimmy Swaggart's WJYM (730), Bowling Green OH was there and alone.

Oops ... should be new logs #827 and 828, not 829/830.

KYNO is a bit stronger than usual, and KVIN weaker.

Otherwise, I haven't really done any listening lately due to a lack of time.

Maybe tonight I can check it out for a bit.

At my location northwest of Chicago, these past few nights: No New York (including WGY and WHAM) and no WLW. WCKY in, but weak

Same oddities occurring in east Texas. No WSB or WLAC, KOA is struggling mightily, heck, even KOKC is much weaker than usual.

MW was not much better than a bad summer night. SW was mostly deadsville. Welcome to the new solar cycle.

Remember, the peak of the last cycle, #24 (which wasn't bad, really) had the same amount of solar irradiance that the solar minimums did in the 1970s. There's a chart on NASA somewhere that shows it. Whether Solar Irradiance makes any difference to the ionosphere, I haven't been able to ascertain.
