MAJOR OOOOOOPS at 760 KFMB

I am shocked that a major station as KFMB-AM would not be regularly manned a strictly be on automation without anyone monitoring what the automation was actually doing.

Last night for hours they were running Clark Howard on top of a feed of ABC News which then dumped and ran into their delayed feed of Clark Howard. It would clear up...and then by the top of thehour it would happen again.

I can see they are going to have to do a small fortune of makegoods.

If they would have to hire someone, what would be the point of automation. Likely, if that happened all night long, then you are one of the few who were up to notice. Although, it does suprise me that this was happening on a Top 20 Market station...

This isn't the first time it has happened over there, but it sounds like this is the longest it's gone on. When I've heard it in the past it's always been 4 or 5 minutes, then it's cleared up. But I don't tend to listen for longer than 30-40 at a time driving somewhere, so I could have missed the repeating effect.

Theoretically yes...but it also comes down to their responsibility in case of a local emergency. Who is there to coordinate things before the rest of the news staff comes in? If KFMB is so hard up (hahaha), why don't they have an intern there who is able to override when the automation screws up...

You may be surprised but there are people listenin' all day and all night... Just because you may be sleeping, Garrett, doesn't mean that others do.

The whole thing sounded so amateurish and ghetto.

Ha, I have no illusions about the fact that everyone does not have the same sleeping habits as me. In fact, I was DX'ing KNX at 1:29 am last night (yes, here in Lubbock TX).

But while I'm sure people are out in about, that does not mean KFMB is able to sell enough air time to justify a life staffer. If they did, they'd probably still have the trivia show on, or even Rollye James. I remember when I was running the board overnight at KJoy, there were several hours when I had ZERO spot load, and if Jacor could have automaded back then, it would have happened.

The "emergency" arugement has already been made and debated, especially since the big fires San Diego had a couple of years ago.

Actually their spot load seems to be VERY heavy overnights....

My bet is that they are all either bonus spots to fill necessary breaks, repeats of whatever spots ran originally in the show, or P.I. spots.
______________

$10/hr? For five or six hours a night, that could come out to all of $1,200 a month! Somehow stations in much smaller markets (KKOB/Albuquerque comes to mind) are board-oped 24/7. Think they're selling out?; they don't even cover the local breaks during Savage from 9-11pm.

I'd agree with that...although they seem to be the same advertisers most of the time. No PI spots.

Or make-goods,
Or barter,
Or national spots running from the network...
