Major Skip in the South

Well, I can add a few more catches tonight: WZZK 104.7 like a local from Birmingham… WHHY 101.9 and WMXS 103.3 from Montgomery (each airing the same ad for the Wagon Wheel II when I tuned in!) and finally a new best to the east: WHFX 107.7 Darien, GA "Fox 107.7", part of the New Brunswick, GA/Jacksonville, FL market. Awesome!

Was driving through Baldwin County today trying to listen to 92.1 WZEW. The signal suddenly crapped out on me and three or more stations were fighting over the frequency. I couldn't identify any of the noise as WZEW programing or CHR from 92.1 out of Destin. Also I never got my radio "seek" to stop on 96.1 anywhere west of "Car City" in Pensacola, 96.1's signal was just pitiful. 100.7 appeared to be airing dead air but my radio was having way too much trouble trying to get a HD lock on WCOA-FM, so that 5 second HD delay might have had something to do with the dead air, or maybe it was just dead air. When I got into Mobile everything cleared up, but when I started driving back east the signals all died out around the time I drove past the WHIL tower.

This year the skip and tropo seem different. I'm not catching strong signals from up north or from out in Texas, Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado, etc.... I'm just getting a hash of everything blended together making radio unlistenable. And it seems worse in areas where I can see the blinking strobies on top of the tower the station broadcasts from.
