Major sports go to bat for TV v. Aereo

The National Football League and Major League Baseball filed a brief with the Supreme Court strongly backing local television in its dispute with Aereo over unauthorized redistribution of broadcast programming.

I think eventually, the networks may have to "play ball" with Aereo and come to some sort of agreement where Aereo has to pay some sort of compensation or consideration to broadcasters.

Joseph_Gallant: You may not be aware that the crux of the issue is that Aereo believes it does not need to pay the networks under the law.

If a retransmission consent fee is called for (which is not what multiple judges have ruled to date), that would be Aereo who "plays ball", not the networks. The networks would almost certainly drop the lawsuit if Aereo decided it was in their best interest to pay CBS Corp. for carrying WCBS-TV and NBCU for carrying WNBC-TV and so forth.

I've said before an i'll say again: Aereo has only survived by the grace of a 2-1 decision of an appeals court. The next level up might not see things the same way. The scathing dissent of the one judge should serve as a roadmap for broadcasters on how to fight this. I think Aereo is absolutely violating copyright laws. That said, I like the service. I hope Aereo wises up and works out a retransmission deal for these stations.
