MAJOR THUMBS UP - VIBE FM 88.7 MALTA (Dance and R&B)

http://www.vibefm.com.mt VIBE FM 88.7 ALL OVER MALTA (Dance/Rhythm) mms://wms.di-ve.com/vibe 128 K

It's Malta's version of the UK's Kiss and Galaxy radio stations, and it is HOT! The music mix is great for a commercial Dance station, and best of all there's very very little of those annoying Dance remixes to Pop songs that are so prevalent on American Dance stations.
The only weird thing is that while the DJs/presenters talk in Maltese the commercials are in English.

Good call and a great radio station. Yes, as a former British colony, English is extremely prevalent; however, I'd say really only 85% of the population really speak it. Maltese still is the favorite medium of communication of the general population. An interesting point is that the Maltese strictly believe in English as the medium of BUSINESS communication. It could be that this mentality is what is driving the commercials to be broadcast in English. By the way, the 15% of the population that doesn't speak English tend to be the low income (fisherman, blue collar) population.

Also, as a tidbit, Maltese is actually a Semitic language close to Arabic, but writing in Roman script in a predominantly Catholic country. The extreme right wing Americans would just die if they even knew that! A Christian country speaking an Arabic language! Go figure!

Your knowledge of global cultures is phenomenal.
I didn't realize Maltese is a semitic language (don't forget Hebrew is one such language as well). To me Maltese sounds more like Turkish though when I hear the announcers speak.

Dance and R&B......has a similar formula to Dancevoort FM, but hell, womething like this in the US. Great source! :)

Thanks CHRles for those awesome words! Everytime I get my AA boarding pass, and it says AAdvantage Silver member, I say to myself - maybe it's time to settle down. Then I realize how great travelling is - and all the great radio stations I get to sample. Eventhough I came to this continent as a young boy, I still have deep routes in Europe (Italy and Ukraine - best of both worlds). Those Italian roots have given me a couple of trips to Malta over the summer with the family! I always used to think what a strange country - Italian, Arabic, and English culture all mixed together. Of course, now as a wise old man, I really appreciate that mixture and all the travelling I did as a kid!
