Make it interesting in OKC! (Yawn...)

Does anything ever happen in this market? Some of these low-rated, under-performing stations should make some moves in my opinion. For example, KRXO has a blowtorch signal, and they are not likely to beat WWLS. Very few markets have two FM sports stations that make money. Yes, I know, Boston is an exception, but they have all 4 major sports teams. It just seems like a waste of a powerful signal. How about giving KJ103 some competition? Tyler has all of these signals and doesn't seem to know what to do with them. How about Cumulus/Champlin doing something else with KQOB? They have slid to a 1 share and they have been doing Adult Hits for nearly 20 years with little success. How about putting the Rhythmic CHR format on 104.9 on that signal? Cumulus seems committed to the format, but 104.9's ratings have been mediocre at best since moving to that frequency, and has been as low as a 1.2 share. Or how about somebody do an Urban format? KVSP fades in and out east of I-35 and has not been directly challenged. The are some holes in the market, like smooth jazz, soft AC and AAA. Those could be tried with a translator or rimshot signal. No wonder this forum has little activity, neither does the market. I used to work in OKC in the early 2000's, and it doesn't take much for me to keep tabs on the market with so little going on. How about a little excitement?

When you look at how each of those clusters is doing, Tyler, iHeart, and Cumulus are in similar positions. I suspect all are satisfied with where they are, and spending a ton of money to make drastic changes isn’t likely to gain anybody much. Seems the most likely candidate for a change would be KQOB 96.9, but I don’t know what it would do if it were to pull the trigger.

Seems like urban is biggest potential hole in the market. As you mention, KVSP is a rimshot, and a full market signal would seem to have potential. OKC has a large enough Black and Hispanic population, and your typical urban station has an audience that’s also around 40% white. Of course, urban still seems to be a little tough to sell. In addition to the perception of it appealing to a lower income audience, that audience is usually younger and male, which is also less desirable to many advertisers. I also seem to remember a sizable percentage of OKC's Hispanic population is Spanish-dominant, which means most of them won’t be listening to urban. The potential, though, would still seem to exist there.

Soft AC might be one, too. I wouldn’t consider smooth jazz or AAA to be market holes, even though I like both formats personally. Smooth jazz tends to skew old, and AAA has been dealing with an aging audience and slow growth for a long time.

OKC is a terribly and embarrassingly boring market.
So are most markets.
Take Atlanta. BORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRing.....

Another wasted signal is 1520, which goes all over the Great Plains at night.
