Making reguest

Ok I was just wondering this, for what reason I dont know, But I remember back in the day you could call a radio station and request a song, and maybe within a few hours you might hear that song.

My question is do radio stations still play request if they even still get any?. With any song at your finger tips is there even a reason to call a radio station a reguest a song.

And with so many stations on automation is it even possible anymore?

you: "hey, can you play _____________"

jock: "sure, I'll try to get that on for ya"

(three hours later the song comes on, at the time it was logged to begin with...)

you: "yay, they're playing it for me!!!"

Stations that take requests have been rare for a long time. Now they're pretty much non existent.

My understanding is that, unless it was a specified “all-request hour” (or similar), radio stations have never really taken requests. If you requested a song and eventually heard it, it’s only because that song was already scheduled for airplay.

KSTM used to have "The Nooner" a full hour of phoned in requests, with the requestor being taped and played before the song.

They would play just about anything requested, from Devo to Sinatra to Zappa.

It was a great time

Oh, you can hear requests pretty often... at least a couple times during a DJ's shift. But here's the catch: It's almost always after midnight, and depending on the station, more often during the weekends. I can think of two or three stations that do this. I hear them all the time. And then of course, there's KOOL's "Drive-Thru Cafe"; all requests in the noon hour... where people can even request "Brown Eyed Girl"... yet again. ;D
