Maltshop Memories

Just a shot in the dark here from a guy that has been in the music business for some 30 odd years, what would happen if somebody decided to take an AM that was not doing so hot and decided to program it between WKII 1070AM in Charlotte County and Oldies 107.9 FM in Sarasota county?? I'm talking about a station that would cater to the "Baby Boomer" set " Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holley, Bill Haley, The Platters, Frankie Avalon" etc.etc. NO "elevator" music but on the other hand NO "Blondie" Let's face it, the majority of the folks moving down to FL. are "Baby Boomers". Have you been to an old car show recently?? The WKII/Big Band set is either dead or in the nursing home with one foot in the grave. Oldies 107.9 FM seems to be "Lost in space" as to what to program, just yesterday I heard a Blondie tune backed by a Tony Orlando tune. Sugar and salt both taste good but not out of the same shaker! Please post comments.

The proposed format you suggest sounds like a winner. It would be similiar to WVLG - 640 in The Villages; in addition to the artist you mention; WVLG plays the Beatles, The Supremes, 5th Dimension, Mammas and Pappas, Beach Boys and some of the mellow hits of the Rolling Stones (i.e. Ruby Tuesday).

The bulk of the population in the Villages are in their 50's and 60's and that format seems to work well for them. Anyone driving up through Webster, Wildwood, Leesburg, or the Villages, might want to check out WVLG; they are live and local at least 18 hours a day, 7 days a week and they do a lot of local promotions.

That type of format, along with a lot of local promotions might work for 1470 in Dunedin as well.

Bankruptcy would happen.

"The Villages" are a custom tailored, made for closeness "neighborhood" that has no major metro area next to it. You've got to haul to go to Orlando or even Ocala. Live and local works well because they've locked up the locals...and VLG sounds good both in format and technical

Dunedin is stuffed into the Tampa Bay metro. Canadian, greek, northern snow birds, transients, and a few crackers...Live and local would be buried.

Really thought that "True Oldies" was going to fill that niche, however, to be competitive they've mainstreamed the format. There is room for a format that plays early rock and roll and the classic R&B that isn't being played on mainstream "oldies" outlets. Sure, it won't be for the masses, however, you can carve a small yet loyal audience. And yes, it will skew older. Take 1470 and make Dunedin/Palm Harbor's station. Be so local it hurts. As someone said on another thread, price it right. A decent living can be made. Get some old guys (like me) who know the music and love it and can intelligently talk about it.

If Porky Chadwick, one of true pioneers on Doo=Wop can come out of retirement in Tarpon Springs, he would at least make a great consultant. I know I'd love it, but then ( according to the board pundits) nobody cares what women of 60 want in programming--------even if I look 40, drive 55, shop at Nordstrom's and buy a new car every three years.

Agree. Sure, if you own a "flame-throwing" FM it wouldn't make too much sense to do a narrow niche and a demo that, for some reason, time buyers avoid like root canal, however, on select stations, it will make you a decent living. Why the heck not go after a demo that no one is aiming at? Use image liners to reinforce that the station is for "them". And, in the case of 1470, be LOCAL til it is corny.
"Not for everyone...just for special listeners, like YOU" Do birthdays, lost dogs, and buddy up to the Chamber of Commerce and City Council members. How about a feature "The Soundtrack of Your Life"....if there was a movie of your life, what 5 songs would be the soundtrack. Then, a feature. "Here is the soundtrack of Mary Smith's life" and play the five songs.

Why can't all you former / current big wigs get together and buy a little local station, so that at least some of us frustrated former baby dj's and news people can get back into a "hobby that doesn't cost me too much"... and that we love ???

Let me know when it happens... I'll be waiting...

enjoy the day...

I know there was a CP for an LPFM issued in the Palmetto or west Bradenton area. I cant tell if this station was ever built. If it wasnt, maybe the owner of the CP will let it go. I have most of the equipment to put an LPFM on the air, and could easily finance the rest. I would program it with pre beatles oldies, and classic country hits pre garth brooks. In fact the two formats will place nice together in my opinion. Volunteers would run it and we would have a blast doing it. Its just too bad that most LPFM's wound up in the hands of churches and preachers all relaying the same stuff.

sbe1: 96.1 WLAS-LP is a licensed LPFM in Bartow. Except for a few equipment tests, the station never made it on the air. Sadly, the owner Lloyd Scott (WPUL fame) passed away last week after a long illness. This was a hobby out of love of radio. I hope the equipment and license can fal into the right hands over there and something real can come of it.

1470 would be a good one, but the LPFM idea has more legs and better potential..neither will be a money maker so we would have to get real comfortable with the taste of ramen noodles. But there is such a thing as underwriting of programming and operations, and once the LPFM is up you CAN get translators..and you CAN LMA the 1470 signal I guess. Between all of us there is equipment, music inventory, talent and passion...just not a lot of money. Should be no problem. Count me in for whatever I could pitch in with.

As for the older demographics and the lack of interest in "us"..I really think it is the advertising people themselves who are regarding themselves as young, and energetic and are living in thier own cosmos..they are afraid to approach an old line sponsor. The old line ad agencies have been sold to younger owners, but it's true the 55+ people have the money. We may very well be the last generation that has any real buying power short of maxing out thier credit cards..IF they can still get those.
