WHYY-FM keeps dumping out of NPR's Morning Editon for local drek.
And this seems to be increasing.
I know they've got their highly paid managers who have to justify their existance, plus prime real estate, lavish quarters and state of the art equipment. ("Please call. We need your support to stay on the air.") Plus a staff top-heavy with men with African-sounding names and women with hyphenated names.
Even so, people listen to 91FM in the morning for NPR's Morning Edition, not to hear some guy from the Franklin Institute do astronomy trivia (maybe this is how they pay for the weather reports). And for all the community service puff pieces that replace real news (it sounds like All Karen Phillips, All The Time).
Today we had an extended puff piece singing the praises of a food co-op where Mt. Airy Yuppies go to get cheap groceries. Since this wasn't really news, apparently they felt they did not need to do full disclosure and tell people that Terry Gross is a member. All that was missing were a couple of choruses of Blowin' In The Wind.
I wonder what hard news story the rest of the country got to hear while Philly heard this schlock.
And they seem to be doing a lot of Delaware stories lately, too. Is the state giving them money for radio, like they do for TV (and with what strings attached)?
