"MAN-TALK" - Who, in Boston might go with that?

Have noticed a few stations in different markets (outside of New England) changing their formats to "MAN-TALK". - What station in the Boston area, do you think may go with this new format, if any? - WJNA, a 640 powerhouse in West Palm Beach/Miami recently dropped adult-standards to go with man-talk. - And just what IS man-talk? Don't we have that with WEEI? - I mean, if you take away sports from a man-talk format, what is left?

Which stations are these? Just WMEN/WPB AFAIK.

WZAN/Portland (ME) has done pretty well with this format w/o any sports, although Don and Mike don't play too well outside of the NE, save KHTK/Sacrameno.

Isn't most talk radio pretty male-oriented to begin with? Between sports and conservative politics talk stations seem to have targeted over-40 men quite nicely, as indicated by Arbitron.

Is there any 24/7 feed of syndicated "man-talk?" If so, it might replace the sports talk on 890 or 1510. I understand that there is enough syndicated "girl-talk" now to pretty much program a station with it around the clock. If it's possible with girl-talk, why not with man-talk? From what I hear, WIP, though nominally a sports talker, hasn't really done sports talk for three years or more. If so, is CBS ready to put a few WIP shows into national syndication? Would Philadelphia man-talk play nationwide? I think that by now, the world knows what a hoagy is ;>)

No doubt one of the deterrents to a man-talk format is fear of those monster new FCC indecency fines. I wonder whether it might be possible to reliably automate the producer's job of hitting the dump button? Maybe speech-recognition software has advanced to the point where DSP algorithms could reliably catch the naughty words--especially if the delay were long enough.

I thought mornings on 'AAF were just a bad infomercial for a Mantown DVD and a calendar.

Just sayin'

WIP is still sports talk... confrontational sports talk but that's par for the course in Philly, who rival Boston fans for passion and a critical outlook. It's funny... there's an ESPN outlet with local shows and they're promoting themselves as a civil alternative or something like that.

True, but the DVD is a recent addition. Like Stern, they have the ladies in there but you can't see 'em anyway (hence the DVD I guess).

I listen once in a while ... it's funny to hear them rip on Spaz. That's good radio. And Kevin B does great impressions.

I've long argued for outsourcing the dump button to India, where operators could listen to two stations, one in each ear, with an accompanying button for each.

That is the whole show! they rip on "Spazz" and stroke local atheletes, and promote their boring "mantown" calendar/dvd/whatever. There is nothing there.

Does Man-Talk equal Hot-Talk + Sports? If so, I could see BCN again drift in that direction.

If this were actually the case, then please explain to me why Hill-Man has been on the air for such a long period of time? He has a good amount of listeners and maybe you personally don't like his show, but there are plenty of people out there who enjoy listening to him everyday

I don't know that 'plenty' is the right word, but he does find a nice middle ground in the ratings. Not low enough to fire, not high enough to be taken seriously (except by BCN, who really come across as lame when they attack his show-which seems to be once every couple of hours).

I enjoy listening from time to time, but find the use of Spaz as a foil very sad. He can't even string together the words to defend himself from attacks; when he tries to defend an opposing view point it turns pathetic.

That show might take off if it had a well spoken 'liberal' for a foil rather than the knuckle dragging on both sides.

WIP is indeed guy-talk and is doing well. The so-called ESPN affiliate for Philly, WPHY-920 in Trenton, has a fair signal over the city in the daytime with 1.4 kW, but when it drops to 1 kW and tightens its pattern somewhat at sunset, it just about drops out of hearing south of the city. At night on 920 driving home I hear WHJJ in Providence,
CKNX Wingham ON, or CJCH Halifax. WPHY is still listenable to an extent at home but can be nulled out.

Ok I'll explain "Hill man" started as a van driver and worked his way up to where he is today. In some circles that is considered something to be admired, in radio though that means he's worked at one station on air, never a good thing becasue he knows one way to work, they way he has there forever. So a former van driver is probably pretty cost effective. Same deal for Carrie. Sure he probably makes more than the rest of the jocks but I doubt he is being paid in line with Boston morning hosts whod o quite well. There are two explainations for you.

Judging from the Rolex Ernie Boch gave him for Christmas, I would guess keeping advertisers happy accounts for some of his long shelf-life.

I would have to agree with that. IF you kiss advertiser ass like that show does you're bound to be a hit with clients and have a long career. I cant fault him for that except that it is at times unlistenable to hear him massage Ernie's ego, that guy is a used car salesman in every sense of the word!.
