Mancow in the Morning

Wow, I hope when those Carmel moms try to tune into the Song 93.9 in mornings after Christmas.......

they manage to keep their keep the minivan out of the ditch.

Well, Cumulus does have a love affair with Mancow on their talk stations as of late, but in Indy, it could be just as well because it allows them to easily negotiate for the rest of the TRN stable. Sure, XNT had Ingraham on late at night, and I presume she'll be live on FM, but seeing that Glenn Beck is really the only A or B level talent left, clearing Mancow means Cume-less can eliminate their hassle of finding a syndicated morning show (local? what?) and get some well-liked shows in the process.

But if Howard couldn't beat Bob & Tom, can Mancow?

Bob & Tom are the gold standard in Indianapolis, and I don't see Mancow taking that away from them. It's true that neither Bob & Tom or Mancow are nearly as "shocking" as they used to be, but the two shows differ greatly due to Mancow's political views and discussion...something Bob & Tom tend to stay away from. If Mancow maintained the edge he had back in 1999 over the years, there might be something to worry about on Fall Creek Road.

Let's just hope they do this talk station in Indy right. I'm not really that impressed with the FM talker they have in Cincinnati, but then again most of their competitors in Cincinnati mix a significant portion of local talk to their syndicated talk roster.

I don't want to get into a "Bob and Tom are better than..." argument. Indiananapolis worships those guys and I'm totally bewildered about that. That's not the point.

I don't remember Howard Stern ever getting a CHANCE to beat Bob and Tom. Whoever was carrying him bailed when anyone who knows a LITTLE about Howard says it will take him about 2 years to get the job done in the market if the PD has the sack to keep him around and lose a few sponsors to gain a bunch more (anyone read any of Howard's books, see "Private Parts", check on how long it usually takes him to dominate a market, anyone? Bueller?).

I'm not a big fan of Mancow either, but he'll face the same thing. Lots of pressure from Bob and Tom diehards and a weak-kneed PD getting complaints from the local car dealership and/or funeral home will have Mancow off the air in about 6 months and Indy listeners chanting, "Ain't nobody beats Bob and Tom! Shoot!".

Ding Ding! We have a winner, folks!

Bob and Tom are the KINGS of Indy moring shows, and morning shows in many
other markets as well. Why? Because they understand our midwestern humor.
Anyone who tries to take them on here will fail. Go ahead. try it. Youv'e seen
and heard copy cats come and go many times.
Nobody will beat Bob and Tom.

Like I said.

On a personal note, if by midwestern humor you mean somebody who likes things that haven't been funny since the late 80's, count me out.

Again, give someone the CHANCE to fail against Bob and Tom first and then give me a call.

Bob and Tom were at their best stealing old Steve and Gary bits, by the way.

Note: PERSONAL opinion. Don't waste your breath trying to convert me: I don't "get" it, I "don't know what's funny", etc. Yada yada...

Howard Stern rarely has much luck in the midwest. His humour (if that's what you want to call the strippers & porn stars) doesn't connect here.

I have noticed that B&T are 90% promoting the web site, their CD's and their web site. Also, Griswold seems to be talking "down" to the listeners alot lately.

Maybe Mancow will give the listener a break from B&T, but will he sustain? No.

The only chance Mancow (or any show of that vein) has of success is if management is patient enough to let the show grow over the course of a couple of years. Cumulus is not that patient. I heard there's a one year deal in place for Mancow. I wouldn't expect it to be renewed.

People who live in the Midwest who enjoy Howard should rejoice that he finally made his way to satellite.
I don't know what chance he's had in the midwest other than the brief shot in Indy radio. Can you site other examples where he's "rarely had much luck"?

Also, saying it's just "strippers and porn stars" I guess would be similar to me saying Bob and Tom's show is just really lame song parodies and the only thing ever laugh-out-loud funny is the GUEST comedian they have on, but not actually them. So I can see where you're coming from (?). I'm sure if I listened for hours at a time to B&T, it would be way more and I would be a big fan.
It's all personal taste, of course.

I grew up listening to them, and idolized them, and got into radio because of them. I get the podcasts. I laugh when chick talks. I bet I have a good laugh once every hour or two when a comedian is not on. They drive everything into the ground, and Tom is such a square. If he says "Hip-Hop Music" one more time...

I also listen to Howard, Don & Mike and Adam Carolla everyday, and personally, I think those three shows are light-years better then Bob & Tom. They make me laugh consistently and often.

If you actually listen to Stern, he has strippers or a porn actress on once or twice a week, but really it is 4 hours of goofing on each other and just talking about various things. People have such a big misconception of what that show is NOW.

Now that WXNT is losing some decent shows, what about heading into a more "hot-talk" direction with a show like Don & Mike to fill that 3-6 slot... They won't be back until 1-2-07, but that's a pretty decent show, and as a male around 25, I'd rather listen to a mindless Don & Mike then a mindless Hannity.

In Stern's defense, he wasn't necessarily on the a station that really aimed at his primary demographic, 18-34 males. Granted, The Buzzard was an edgier classic rock station, but his show probably would have been more successful with an active rock or alternative format in place. And yes, I am aware that Stern was on other classic rock stations, but most were heritage rockers that adopted classic rock after Stern had signed on.

Opie and Anthony is a hard show to really describe considering that they aren't really like either Howard Stern or Bob & Tom. The show is in between the two in terms of topics and comedy, but their humor can often be rather cringy. They mainly goof on themselves, each other, the media & entertainment industry, their die-hard fans with "issues", and their callers who they interact with greatly throughout the show.

I can see O&A having a better chance at drawing more listeners from Bob & Tom, but if they were to come to Indy, they'd have to be on a male dominated 18-34 station in order to be the most successful, and I seriously doubt The X would put on a show that has the potential to knock out Clear Channel Indy's bread 'n butter.

The way Opie and Anthony talk is so incredibly annoying. I can't even listen to them. They do this Short sentence-the paus way of speaking that drives me nuts.

WXNT is Entercom, and O&A is CBS. Could WXNT put them on even if they wanted to?
