Mancow Not Bob & Tom

I talked to Norm Arascept at Bob & Tom. He said that cmf wanted a free week to try out the show versus Mancow. They said no. He was told that Mancow said yes, and it will start on Feb 4th. If it sounds good, it will be the new AM show on WCMF. Don't know if there is anything to this or not. Just disappointed that I won't hear my favorite show. I may have to move back to Indy....

Wasn't Mancow even dumped in his home market of Chicago?

Can't see him faring any better than any other import who's tried and failed in Rochester. Maybe this is a negotiating tactic to bring Wease's price down. But if they're serious about it, it looks even more like a cost-cutting move in preparation for selling the station, probably in a package with PXY, Zone and Fickle. (That would let Entercom keep Warm 101.3.)

And who first suggested this... uh, oh yeah...

Mancow in Rochester? Brilliant strategy! Put Mancow on for a year. Ratings tank. Cancel Mancow. Hire SUNY Brockport or St. John Fisher communications grad. Morning drive numbers improve slightly. New hire sounds better than Mancow. Balance sheet looks good. Stations sold. New owner brings Wease back at a market compatible salary. Wease thrilled not to have to wear blue golf shirt and greet customers at Wally World. Print media eats it up. Station gets lots of ink. Wease fans dilerious with joy. Problem solved.

Feh!

Wease could collect an additional $200K by resolving this issue sooner instead of later. He ain't ever gonna get the kind of cash that he got in his last contract, so he might as well get over himself and deal with the new reality. No sense in levin money on the table...

True and well put.

The health problems he had were pretty serious and that could have changed his outlook. Maybe he's decided to go out on his own terms---either meet his price or he walks off into the sunset. Maybe he's made enough coin to be set.

If he's as stubborn as I think he is, he's probably going to leave what is still a good deal to the rest of us on the table. A noble, yet stupid position to take. In doing that he's probably thrown his entire crew "under the bus". That's not so noble.

Really, is anybody surprised? In Wease's defense, it's easy to understand how and why Wease is more concerned about "#1." Not noble for sure, but it's human nature. Understandable, if not predictable.

I wonder if the morning shows at WYRK, WJYE, 97 Rock and the afternoon show at the Edge, WBEN and 97 Rock are paying attention to what's going on at WCMF? Does it have any bearing on their situations?

I don't think that any of the above have nearly the pay scale that Wease had, but that doesn't mean that cuts won't be made. Regent, Entercom, and Citadel are all under pressure to get their stock price up. That means that profit margins will have to go up despite currently unfavorable economic conditions. As CC has demonstrated, the typical "creative" solution from corporate is to cut expenses (i.e. "bodies") - and those "bodies" won't come out of the executive suites at corporate headquarters.

I think that we need a real primary election dog-fight in NY, and a tight election in November. As much as political ads drive me crazy, they're a revenue stream that could help offset an otherwise soft economy.
