Mancow

So I turned on WABC tonight and got stuck with Mancow. In the past I've expressed my dislike for him, but since there wasn't much else on the ol' radio this evening I would give him a second chance to see if I was wrong in my assessment.

I wasn't.

This guy is like Ricochet Rabbit. Topic wise, he's all over the place and can't stick with any one subject, story or idea for more than sometimes as short as :30 seconds. This isn't AM drive, the TSL is a bit longer than that. Same deal with the time checks. It's SUNDAY NIGHT, we don't need the time.

And that "character" he plays on the air... who can listen to that? He's talking 500 mph like B Mitchell Reed in 1962, except he's not BMR, he's trying to do some form of political talk. Nobody has a real conversation sounding (use your best "hurling disk jockey" impression here) "LIKE MANCOW EVERRRYBUDDY, WABC, CHECK OUT MY TWITTER..." etc. etc.

I applaud WABC for trying to be local on the weekends, but if this is the best that you've got, I'll take something syndicated. If he's here to stay, the PD needs to tell him to: 1. SLOW DOWN 2. Speak like a real human being, not a DJ from 1975 on a 500 watt AM station in Peoria hurling the weather forecast at me 3. Stick to one topic for a segment, or at least 5 minutes, before moving on.

Could you at least admit that Mancow is somewhat of an improvement over Monica Crowley?

I actually enjoy Monica Crowley's program more than Mancow. She is actually intelligent.

John Batchelor is worse, and he's on every night. He talks too fast, and has on a bunch of guests on at the same time. I hope they get someone else for Sunday nights.

Crowley may be a bit dull, but she doesn't grate on my nerves like Mancow's over hyped way of doing talk radio. I would turn her off because I'm bored by the topic, not because she sounds like a bush league Top 40 jock imitating talk radio.

If the poster up there thinks that Batchelor talks too fast... what is Mancow then? The guy from those old "Micro Machines" commercials?

Why doesn't WABC hire an auctioneer next?

Mancow is only on one night, and his voice isn't as annoying.

I don't know, Batchelor at least sounds like a human and can stick to a topic for one segment. Mancow sounds like Human Numan, just without the music. His delivery was cool in 1986, on your hot rockin' flame throwin' first to worst Z-100. It doesn't translate to listenable talk radio. Joe Crummey made the transition from jock to talk quite well, is entertaining and sounds like a normal conversation, not constant schtick. It's not the voice with Mancow, it's that delivery. Nobody actually talks like that in real life, and in my opinion, talk radio hosts must be relate-able to their audience and sound as though they're a friend you're talking to in a living room or at work. Mancow sounds like he's always trying to hit the post with no records...

It appears to be the same topic that most of the other WABC hosts stick to - "all blame Obama, all the time..."

I'm not talking content of topics, I'm talking formatics. I hate hip-hop, but can appreciate a well formatted urban station. Same goes for some hosts on WABC or WOR. This has nothing to do with what I think or the hosts think, it's how they execute their show. Mancow sounds like a frantic jock, all that's missing are the bells and horn.
