Mandatory FM-The Hollingers

Hey, I am contemplating taking a job with KCUB Mandatory FM in Stephenville and wanting to get everyone here's opinion on the station and the people that run it-The Hollinger family. From talking to some people I understand that John Hollinger is the owner, his wife Pamela is the production manager, his son Shayne is the Program/Music Director, and Shayne's wife Annabeth is the Promotions director. Definetly looks like a family run business to me. Has anybody here ever met or dealt with any or all of the Hollingers and what can you tell me about them. Also what does everybody here think of Mandatory FM and the format and the direction that station is going in? Any help? Thanks

I am familiar with the station. KCUB-FM was owned by the fellow that owned and sold KBOC-FM in Bridgeport a few years back, but I wasn't aware that he sold KCUB-FM. I know that to make the KBOC deal work with it's increased power, the transmitter site for KCUB had to be moved to Ranger, TX and it put the station's studio in Stephenville almost out of the transmitter's signal reach. Never heard how all that worked out. The owner I am referring to was Dick Witkovski. He seemed like a nice fellow, but was in the broadcasting business strictly for the money, pretty much like Gary Moss. He really hampered KCUB by making his deal on KBOC. The reason this all happened is because both stations were on the same frequency, 98.3, which he used greatly to his advantage.
If the Hollinger family now owns it, I'd bet you are good to go, but Dick Witkovski still owns it, no telling what he might do.
So, to answer your question, check it all out. It wouldn't hurt to be sure and now you have a little history about the station.
Interestingly, Witkovski also owned, and may still own, the 98.3 frequency in Palestine, TX. I'm not sure he had to make any adjustments there, but he did have to move a station in Hugo, OK further north into Oklahoma to make the KBOC deal work.
As I said, for him, radio was strictly business.
I think, small town radio is much safer than the big city, if you can make that work for you.

I'm not in radio, and don't know the family, but it sounds like you are looking at getting your foot in the door. From a business perspective, many times you need to take the opportunities when they present themselves. Instead of lying fallow looking for the "perfect position", it may make sense to take the job, if it's offered, get the experience and build your resume, (and contacts).
