Manders Out

Power Talk cut him loose last week. Clint Olivier won't hang around long if the station's flipping.

Clear Channel couldn't get it right with Rush-freaking-Limbaugh. I wonder if KMJ will go back to broadcasting Premiere content, or if Cumulus will stick with Live-n-Local as long as the numbers are good?

Or will CC keep losing money to save face? Maybe make a last-ditch effort to snap up Appleton or bring back Inga Barks?

Maybe Manders will show up on 1680. Or go back to Nakersfiled.

Premiere content is free to run for them so they aren't losing money. Probably making more than Alice was and that is all that is necessary for powertalk to stick around.

Manders wasn't in Bakersfield; he was at KOH in Reno, NV.

He couldn't make it at KMJ when he was there 10 years ago. It's no surprise that he failed...

I don't think it is. Even though CC owns Premiere Syndication AND KALZ I think affiliates have to pay just like anyone else. Even if the content were cheaper (or even free) on KALZ you gotta sell spots to make money. I heard the same PSA twice in a PM commercial break. PSA Twice + $20 prime time :60's = Not making money.

Wow, I haven't heard that when I have been listening. Paying or not (CC would be paying themselves) not selling the spots is a pretty big deal.

ClearChannel

I used to work at ClearChannel for a couple of months... The writing was on the wall especially because of the philosophy of why they were running the station. The man that is bringing PowerTalk to its knees besides the PD is Casey Bartholomew. Any programming, including Premiere is done on a barter basis. Exchange ad time for free programming. But network programming and making people upset enough to call and complain about the station does not help. Community oriented programming like those on KMJ are becoming more important to the people here in Fresno. Programs nowadays in Fresno need to be more localized rather than syndicated in order to survive.

Is PowerTalk 96.7 flipping back to music? Is Rush and Sean going back to KMJ or move to KGED 1680?
I guess if this happens 1400 will go back to Fox Sports.

It doesn't help that the network programming is old and tired. Rush and Hannity aren't gonna bring in those FM types.

It seems just like any station that CC started. (Like The Beat, The Wolf, The Ball err KCBL and Powertalk, not B-95 or KSOF, they were already established) Doesn't matter if the ratings are good, just matters if it is cheap (free is best) to run, and doesn't lose money.

If anybody wants to know, I wrote that a couple of days back before signing up for my account. And you are right. Network programming is too boring! Syndicate the Chris Daniel Show on KMJ over Premiere and watch the ratings drop after about 15 years or so. These days it seems radio stations are changing formats like changing diapers. Come to think of it, that might just be an insult to babies which for that I apologize.

KALZ/KRZR Premiere Programming is free for barter as with most other stations. They ask for spots that they air in return for the free programming.

Premiere Programming is most definitely NOT "Free for Barter." Limbaugh alone is six figures annually.
You are sorely mistaken my friend. I used to work at PowerTalk as a producer until I missed an early morning shift April 2013 (February - April 2013)... I have a picture to prove that. Multiply the amount of "Network Spots" times the number of affiliates through XM, Broadcast, and Internet (iHeartRadio)... Aside from that, ClearChannel receives monies from it's regional offices and other services (TV, Outdoor, Bus, etc) and mixes it to one big bank account only to then budget the pay to every employee, including Limbaugh. Most bartered programs require affiliates to use a logging software from counterpoint systems indicating the date and time network spots have aired. This is what is known as an affidavit of performance. Premiere, USRN, DialGlobal, Compass, and many other networks use this service as they get money directly from the advertiser with no return or charge for the affiliate. You are right they aren't "free" as there has to be some exchange, this case being exchanging Ad air time for programming. They don't use up all the spot time as the networks allow affiliates to take over at a certain point.

right, it is all barter. Had to laught thinking small and medium market stations paying rush 6 figures to carry him!!

No, it's not. Rates are based on barter and cash in most cases, with the cash part being proportional to market size.

PowerTalk isn't running Rush for barter only. Premiere may not be charging KALZ what they would charge an outside group, but El Rushbo ain't cheap.

Edmer: You were a board-op not an accountant. The money isn't going into one big pot. Multinational, tiered corporations and subsidiaries aren't set up that way in any industry.

Returning to the point of the thread: CC keeps posting on that they're "scouring the nation in search of the next, great PowerTalk afternoon host" and yet there is no posting on the corporate careers page, All Access, or even Craigslist. Has anybody seen a listing anywhere? Or is PowerTalk just running out the clock on sales contracts?

In fact, each iHeart division has separate P&Ls and operates as if it were independent. And Clear Channel Outdoor is a separate company, listed on the NYSE. iHeart is just a major shareholder, but the operations are not consolidated.

I made no claim being an accountant, but I get your point (don't really care to be an accountant)... But going back to PowerTalk, I agree with you that a shift needs to happen if it is going to remain in Fresno.

By the way, although this isn't necessarily tied into Rush, Premiere, or ClearChannel (Other than using their satellite channels) take a look at this TRN Clock. It's similar, but if you take time to listen to the spots, you can tell what is a local spot and which are national http://www.trn1.com/uploads/files/Laura_NEW_Clock.pdf ...

Good Talking with You! And you're the first one to get my name right! Not often that part of my job is recognized, no matter how bad it ended up being. :)

At least I still have a ways to go at Fresno State.
