Manistee bandscans 3/30/13

Nice job getting WHAD 90.7 over 130 miles away! Sounded OK but was a bit noisy.

Observations-

I loved hearing how well some of the Wisconsin stations made it across the lake, especially WPNE 89.3, strong enough for their IBOC sideband to show up on 89.1! Even the small class A's and translators made the trip!

Seventh Day Slumber playing on WORQ 90.1. I met these guys when they came to Coldwater in 2011. I even had my picture taken with them!

Like Crain said.. Awesome get on 90.7 WHAD! But WWDV on 96.9 edges them out by a few miles.

The legendary Bob Uecker calling the Brewers on WDOR! I always try to tune in to that in southern Michigan, but that's very difficult now with WBCT IBOC.

Awesome 'bonus DX' with 92.3, 99.3 and 100.1 all being down. WPJP was no match in the absence of WCUZ!

When I do a full bandscan, I usually take a good look at the radio dial from Radio-Locator, so I know what to expect and especially which frequencies are open. I always note the locals, but I spend more time on the open channels hoping for something to fade up. I would have stuck around on 92.3 a little longer to see if WPWX made it up to Manistee. Having locals off the air is very rare, and you may not get another opportunity like that for a long time. Great bandscan!

Pretty much an IBOC-free dial (except for the WPR and Milwaukee stations)!

As you can see, I did some moving to check if certain stations matched other stations (such as 89.3 and 90.9 - not a match, 94.3 and 99.7 - not a match, 96.1 and 104.5 - a match)

Whenever WCUZ is off, I usually seem to get WVIB from Muskegon.

Seems like it was a southern tropo path, as WHRM, WBCV, WRLO, WYTE, and WRVM (all 100kW from central WI) didn't show up.

WCKC and WCCW were nowhere to be found despite being on the air.

WMYX and WVCY are usually the two strongest Milwaukee stations despite being farther from Manistee than the rest of the Milwaukees. In fact, those two stopped the seek along US-31 near Shelby on Friday. WLUM and WRNW almost never make the trip north. A Milwaukee surprise - no WXSS yet WLVE made it north.

98.5 and 100.3 are the big tropo indicators up here. In dead band conditions, I should get a weak WUPS (98.5) and an even weaker WQON (100.3). During tropo, I usually get WQLH and WNCY instead.
