1926: Comedian/actor/director/producer Jerry Lewis is born (as Joseph Levitch) in Newark, New Jersey.
1941: Game show host Chuck Woolery (Wheel of Fortune, Love Connection, Scrabble) is born in Ashland, Kentucky.
1949: Actor Erik Estrada (ChiPs) is born (as Henry Enrique Estrada) in New York City.
1954: The Army-McCarthy Hearings commence in Washington, D.C. The hearings would receive considerable press coverage, including live television broadcasts, and are widely believed to have contributed to McCarthy's decline in popularity.
1964: KCOY-TV (channel 12) hits the air in Santa Maria, California. The new station was made possible by a 1959 FCC realignment, shifting Fresno’s channel 12 allocation to channel 30 (making Fresno an all-UHF market) and adding 12 to Santa Maria.
1967: Actress Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls) is born in Honolulu, Hawaii.
1970: WLBW (channel 10, Miami, Florida) changes calls to WPLG, in honor of then-owner Katharine Graham's late husband Philip L. Graham.
1976: The last of the “holiday” themed “Peanuts” specials, It’s Arbor Day, Charlie Brown, airs on CBS. (And thank goodness....rumor had it that the next special was to be titled It’s Millard Fillmore’s Birthday, Charlie Brown...)
1980: Closed captioning is first used on American television. The first captioned broadcasts are the ABC Sunday Night Movie, Disney's Wonderful World on NBC, and Masterpiece Theatre on PBS.
1983: Entertainer Arthur Godfrey dies in New York City of emphysema, aged 79.
2008: Actor/director/producer Ivan Dixon (Hogan’s Heroes) dies in Charlotte, North Carolina of complications from kidney failure, aged 76.
