March 17: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on March 17. Discuss or comment as you please……

1949: Actor Patrick Duffy (Man From Atlantis, Dallas, Step By Step) is born in Townsend, Montana.

1953: WBAY-TV (channel 2) in Green Bay signs on as Wisconsin’s second TV station (after Milwaukee’s WTMJ-TV).

1953: WWLP (channel 61) begins broadcasting in Springfield, Massachusetts. It is the first TV station in the state outside Boston, and would move to channel 22 in 1955.

1960: WSLA (now WAKA) launches on channel 8 in Selma, Alabama.

1964: Actor Rob Lowe (The West Wing, Brothers and Sisters) is born in Charlottesville, Virginia.

1993: Actress Helen Hayes (The Snoop Sisters) dies in Nyack, New York of congestive heart failure, aged 92.

1999: Comedian Rod Hull dies in Winchelsea, East Sussex, England, from injuries suffered in a fall from his roof. (He was attempting to adjust his TV antenna to improve reception of a football match.) Hull and his oversized puppet Emu wreaked mayhem upon many stars in his appearances on British, Australian, and U.S. television. (Mark Evanier has an excellent article about Mr. Hull and his rubber bird, written shortly after the former's demise.)

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

I could be wrong but didn't Lowe claim a number of years back ( maybe this was during his "sex tape" scandal ) where he was born in BALTIMORE ?

OTOH for years I have read bios about him that did state he was indeed born in Virginia. If Rob Lowe did claim he wasn't born in Virginia, ah sadly he really isn't alone. I believe both Warren Beatty and Shirley MacClaine, even though both were born in Richmond, I am pretty sure both over the years have claimed "New York City" was the place they were...as I should say.."entered our Earth" ;D

Another one is actor David Arquette ( Corteney Cox's hubby ). I too believe over the years he has claimed New York City as his hometown and the place he was born. Yet according to many bios he was born in Winchester, Virginia. The latter is true though. David back in the early 90's did audition for Winchester's local country music radio station..WUSQ Q102 FM. I actually heard the tape..he really wasn't THAT bad. But alas...David Arquette didn't get the job. I am sure he didn't care since Hollywood paid a hell of a lot more than what WUSQ-FM would have paid LOL.

Coming from someone who actually was born in Virginia..just find it odd that some would claim to be born..well elsewhere. Maybe its over Virginia's more conservative politics? Dunno !!!!!!

It is SO nice to read something pertaining to the date of March 17, and NOT have it pertain in any way to St. Patrick's Day!

No references to wearing of the green, drinking, or "top of the morning".

I have an upstairs neighbor who is a native of Ireland. He informs me that they don't really say "top of the morning" in Ireland. He doesn't know how that started, but speculates that it maybe came from Irish Spring commercials. They're magically delicious.

Thank you Stanislav, for a refreshing post.

Whew! Good thing I didn't go with my original plan to use a green font and to dot all the "i's" with shamrocks.... ;D

1949-1992:"WPIX TV New York airs live coverage of the city's St. Patricks Day Parade with host Jack McCarthy.

My Highight? Interview along the parade route with Maureen O'Hara.....

couldnt resist, lol

BTW: Rod Hull and his EMU. By a mile the funniest contributor to CBS-TV's "Hudson Brothers Show." Great Stuff.
