March 2: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on March 2. Discuss or comment as you please……

1904: Writer and cartoonist Theodore “Dr. Seuss” Geisel (How the Grinch Stole Christmas) is born in Springfield, Massachusetts.

1917: Actor Desi Arnaz (I Love Lucy) is born (as Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y de Acha III) in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba.

1952: Actress Laraine Newman (Saturday Night Live) is born in Los Angeles.

1953: The Academy Awards (Oscars) are first broadcast on television by NBC.

1979: The Jeopardy! that few remember: The short-lived revival All-New Jeopardy! (featuring significantly different rules and game play than previous and later incarnations) ends a brief 5-month run on NBC.

1985: As a promotional gimmick, an episode of NBC’s Gimme a Break! is performed and broadcast live.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

Alex, I'll take Jeopardy! History for $500.

[see above paragraph]

What is the version of Jeopardy! that jumped the shark, then later jumped back?

Also on March 2:

1950: Singer Karen Carpenter (d. Feb. 4, 1983) is born in New Haven, CT. Her life story was depicted in the 1989 CBS made-for-TV movie The Karen Carpenter Story, with Cynthia Gibb in the title role.
