March PPM

KWID (LA BUENA) was #1 6+ and had the largest gain of any station up 6.6-7.3. I believe they are the only Spanish language station that is #1 in any PPM market. They continue to be #1 18-34 as well. They have made a comeback in 25-54, now tied with KMXB for #2.

KSNE was #1 25-54. This is impressive considering in many markets AC is only #1 for the holiday book. Some ACs fall off the face of the earth after Christmas but not SUNNY. They have been trending down 18-34 but they had unusually high 18-34 numbers for an AC to begin with.

Considering how crowded the CHR race has become KLUC had a great March. They were up to #2 6+ 5.6-6.2 and they moved up from #5 to #2 18-34.

CHR in general had a strong March. Besides KLUC, NOW-FM moved from #9 to #5 18-34 tied with HOT which moved from #6.

KPLV moved #12 to #13 18-34 however this was right before the format shift to pure CHR. With the younger music I would expect them to move up 18-34 and the other Top 40s to move down a little and fragment each other. PARTY was showing some 35+ growth. I'm not sure if they can hang on to the upper demos with the younger sound of the staton. If not I would expect them to move to sister station SUNNY as well as OASIS.

KQLL moved up 0.6-1.3. While that might not seem like much I wonder if that is the main reason KKLZ is down? I would imagine that's the station they took most of their audience from.

KXPT was up 4.6-5.1. This was one of the best months for the POINT since the earliest PPMs.

Finally some of the KXNT listeners are drifting to FM. The AM has a 1.7 and the FM moved up to a 1.6. I noticed that except for the legal ID the station now only mentions the FM and makes no refrence to the AM.

March madness was good to KWWN which moved up 2.7-3.2. Not only are they the top spoken word station 25-54...they have even been making gains in 18-34. I wonder if any of this is coming from their FM translator?

Speaking of FM translators, an all-comedy station on a translator in Kansas City surprised (actually shocked) everyone hitting a 4 share. I wonder how the format would do in Vegas? Besides playing comedy cuts, there is a constant stream of comedians in town that would provide for guests, prizes, and advertisers.

Jay....What's happening in the County battle?

6+ KWNR 2.7-2.8 KCYE 2.5-2.5. Neither station is in the top 10 25-54. Many seem to think the market is too ethnic to support two country stations.

The shares are basically split 25-54. No station seems to have the advantage. They seem to go back and forth as to the #1 Country station 25-54. Although, it seems like KCYE has been hotter in recent weeklies. You're right JayF; no room in Vegas for 2 Country stations.

KWNR and KCYE will just keeping splitting the country audience. KWNR has pretty much desimatted it's lineup getting rid of brook obrian and mitch kelly and natalee and stunt runt and most recently bob bishop who was there for a really long time. So it seems like KCYE should do better.

The shares of both Country stations are very low. As JayF and I both mentioned, probably only room for one Country outlet in Las Vegas. The weekly that just came out a couple hours ago showed KCYE 18th and KWNR 20th P25-54 with less than a half share separation. Combined under 5 shares! Amazing considering KWNR's double digit shares 5 or 6 years ago when they were the only Country station in Vegas. Although in Country's target demo W25-54, KCYE has well over a share advantage over KWNR.

It looks like KQQL-AM is getting the entire 1.3 share credited to them. I take that to mean that the FM translator is encoded as "KQQL-AM" ?

The translator doesn't seem to cover Las Vegas too badly if you don't get all that far off the Strip....As I recall from a bit of listening a few weeks ago, it (the FM) isn't too great on the South end by the M Resort, but is OK along the Boulder Highway Strip...
