Two things stood out to me:

First, WTVN has now hit the 4's, with a 4.7 share. I checked back as far as August 2010, and this is the lowest share I saw for the station. If you nose through ratings nationally, politically-oriented talk (mainly conservative, of course) really seems to be trending down, and not just on AM. It doesn't look like just a post-election thing.

Second -- NEWS Flash: WMNI is STILL at a 0.2. ;D
 
I was stunned when I saw the 4.7 for TVN. But almost all talkers are down, especially those who clear Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck in our region.

In Pittsburg WPGB had it's lowest book and has lost over half of it's November numbers. KDKA has had ebbs and flows but for all intents and purposes is flat. PGB is the Limbaugh et al outlet. KDKA is largely local

In Cincy, WLW also had it's lowest books since November and for the second time in the past six months was not the #1 station in the market. The first time was Holiday. This is a "normal" books, sans Reds. WKRC is off about 2 shares from November and flat since then. KRC is the Limbaugh outlet.

In Cleveland, WTAM had it's lowest book in the rolling numbers and off almost 3.5 shares since November. WTAM is a blend of Limbaugh and local

In Detroit, WJR has it's lowest book since November. WJR is Limbaugh and Hannity.

In Chicago, WGN was overall flat. WLS had it's lowest book since November. WLS is Limbaugh, Hannity and Levine
 
Did you see how well variety hits did in Pittsburgh? And how classic hits did in Cleveland and Cincinnati? I say if some of our low rated stations would bring back variety hits they might do well.

Variety hits also did very well in Cleveland, at #3. And yes, I had to do a double-take at WRRK topping the shares in Pittsburgh. They have been slowly building and building. Pittsburgh's classic hits WWSW was no slouch either, at #3.
 
And oddly these stations that are taking top spots and impressive slots demographically similar to the now suffering news/talk demo.

Are some talk radio folks tiring of the same stuff day after day and migrating toward those formats?

That sounds like a plausible theory, and one that could be researched (if anyone has a research budget anymore). BTW, adding a non-MIdwest example to your interesting analysis of Talk's woes, Limbaugh-Hannity-Beck station WFLA Tampa is down for the second month in a row, to 3.3. It used to be in the mid-4's.

Well, data shows that 65+ are by far the most TV-oriented demo, and you can get conservative talk (Fox News) on TV, but for oldies they still have to turn (mostly) to radio
 
Conservative Talk listeners have mostly migrated to Conservative Talk TV, i.e. Fox News. Can CT make a comeback? Who knows, but my guess is the demo is aging and moving on to other platforms and leaving the likes of Rush with an ever diminishing audience. I look for 610 WTVN to continue to drop in the April PPMs. I'm shocked CC hasn't thrown 'TVN on FM yet. My guess is they won't, but if they do, I'd guess 105.7 or 106.7 would be the most likely home for WTVN on FM.

WTVN won't be on the 99.3 translator after all. CC is not ready to kill off 105.7 or 106.7 because
they are making too much money. Too bad because it would be to their advantage to have a FM signal for WTVN.

It might be to their advantage, but no panacea.  Conservative Talk is losing ratings ground on FM too, although of course it varies some by market.  It also seems to be hurting less in general (AM or FM) in diary markets, which isn't surprising since the diary rewards TSL more than PPM (both reward TSL, but diary does so more).

Note WTVN had it lowest book ever. Did these other talkers have their lowers book ever?

WTVN morning host Joel Riley is working on a "secret formula" to bring WTVN out of its downward
rating slump and back to the #1 rated morning show in Columbus.
 
I can't speak to lowest book ever because I don't have history, but they've had their lowest books in the recent ratings periods. I'm not an insider, but my guess is some of the negativity is beginning to wear thin. I'm not hearing solutions, just negative jawboning.
 
A few years ago when I lived in C-bus I was always baffled the way TVN would race through a minute or two of local news to make way for Corby, who would then spend 5-10 minutes reading one story off the Internet about some guy in Australia who got bit by a snake (or whatever). But I guess it worked.

WTVN has rebounded from a 4.7 share in March to a 5.7 share in May. Good for them.
My prediction that we will see WTVN-FM by the end of this year may not materialized after all.

Also, from the May PPMs: WMNI-FM is STILL at a 0.2 and WMNI-AM is STILL at 0.0.
That said, I sure hope they are able to keep the all news format despite the dismal showings in the ratings over the last few months.
 
It's been more than a few months. The WMNI-AM / FM news format has been in place for a year now. The FM has not gotten higher than a 0.3, and the AM is usually between 0.0 and 0.2.

WMNI-AM will be going back to Standards on July 18th. They had higher numbers then 0.0 and
0.2 when they were standards.
