Marconi Award Nominations

Not to take anything away from Slade, because he does a good job, but how is a guy who basically just reads news and hands off between traffic, sports, weather, commercials, etc. considered Major Market "PERSONALITY"? Aren't radio "personalities" supposed to be people who ARE the show. Isn't WSB essentially just news and information in the morning? Couldn't Scott Slade's job be just as easily done by any number of competent news veterans? Maybe I just don't understand the definition of radio personality.

I agree. Many of us here in or out of radio can say the news just as well as any other news reader. To me, this kind of lessens the quality of the Marconi Awards.

Just to clarify. I don't mean for my questioning of Scott's work to be a negative reflection on HIM. As I said, he does a great job and SB is where I get my news and info in the morning. My criticism is, as a previous poster alluded to, more directed at the Marconi's. Seems Scott should be winning awards for news and information not for being a franchise personality.

'say the news'? seems to me if you could...you would.
nothing is as easy at it appears.

You twist my words. An innovative news man should win awards, not a news reader. Wooder, thank you for the clarification.

Innovation is the key - that's why they named it for Marconi! Problem is the Big Radio has stiffled innovation in so many cases. So few stations take the leap into the unknown these days, it's a wonder they still give the award.

I don't live in Atlanta, and don't hear WSB. I suppose greatness is realtive to the whole!

IScott Slade is great but I think there are other "personalities" that could be considered at WSB. However, Slade is more of a "personality" than I think people give him credit for. Scott Slade is the host of the news and yes he does hand it off to other people. However he does get his time in for things that he is passionate about. He brings in guests on the phone, he goes over the calandar of events he is interested in and thinks Atlanta should know about, and it was his idea to do the annaul radio-thon for the AFLAC Cancer Center each August.

Also before Capt. Herb, Scott Slade was WSB's traffic reporter in the time preceding the Atlanta's Morning News era (Cool Bobby Harper anyone?)

I think Slade deserves the nomination. However I am an outsider. I am not in the business but I listen a lot!

I agree with Brian D. I wouldn't describe Scott Slade as a news reader. He's the anchor/host and does interject a fair amount of personality into the show. And he has a great voice for that slot. But I also agree that he's not a personality in the true sense. I would not have thought of nominating Slade for personality of the year.

Having said such, I think it is a really great way to promote your radio station.

Only making tons of money, has a TV show that is a ratings winner, and several books that have done well.

So what's in your wallet?

I was at Burger King the other day and the place was more packed than when I was at Ruth's Chris a month or so ago... does that mean they have better food? Just because Hannity has large ratings doesn't mean he should win the same award for quality every year. BTW, I don't do a show, so you can't compare me to him.

Nevertheless, aren't there other talents who do well? Seems Talkers lists (allegedly) 30 or so talents with 1mil+ listeners to pick from.

Personally, I can't figure out why Sean Hannity is so successful and I'm somewhat conservative. It's boring and he's trite, in my opinion. But obviously, millions of others don't share that opinion.

However back to the original topic, I think Scott Slade more than qualifies for "air personality". It's just not frivilous, wild, crazy, over the top. His persona is perfect for what he does---mornings on one of the top news talk stations in the country. He orchestrates the morning news show very well. Sets his people up for their stories and even for their little parting shots before he moves on. Also as noted, he is a very visible part of the community.

Of course to play devil's advocate, you could chalk his nomination up to lack of true excellence in that category.

Kudos to Slade. He is good. I hope he wins. You are right. He is not wild, over the top, but he does deliver the news in a professional manner day after day after day. Keep it up Scott. I would request less talk about aviation however.
Who else is nominated? Does he have a chance of winning?

Are Marconi's voted on by NAB members? Seems like I remember doing some campaigning for one of our personalities a few years ago! Or, maybe that was R&R awards.
