Margaret Becker & Kelly Willard

In Margaret Becker's case she appears to have changed her musical direction. In Kelly Willard's case she is spending more time with her family. K-LOVE and other AC CCM stations seem to have gone to only playing music from the past 10 years or so, so they aren't played as much now. Margaret Becker was always one of my favorites. One station that I've heard that still plays her music is WFIX in Florence, AL, but even there it's been her music from the 80's and 90's, which is something they do more of than a lot of other CCM stations to their credit.

The same question could be asked about a ton of other CCM artists from the 70's to the 90's. Some are still doing music but since they don't sell as much they have been dropped by the major Christian labels (who are now controlled by the big conglomerates) and don't get airplay from the major CCM stations.

But sometimes there are other reasons. Some have changed their musical direction. Some have moved more into production. Some have become worship leaders or pastors in churches and stopped doing major releases. Others have retired from music completely. In the cases of some female artists, they quit music to become full time moms.

But for what it's worth, here are Wikipedia links for Maggie and Kelly:

There is a radio show/podcast called Full Circle that plays classic CCM, mainly from the 70's and 80's, that also has updates on the artists they play: http://www.fullcirclejesusmusic.com/

That's so sad indeed.

The older singers should get some airtime too.

After all, those singers helped to put CCM on the map, in the first place.

If my radio project was going, I would play the old songs and mix in the new ones too.

I wouldn't be ashamed or apologize for doing it.

R.D.P. <><

P.S. And yes I love me some Margaret Becker. Her music is still awesome and wonderful.

Kelly Willard is an enduring favorite of mine, and MOST DEFINITELY WILL be heard on WPHA, when God raises that up! \o/ IN HIS TIME!!

As I said in another post, its as if today's Christian music has forgotton all about these great artists from that time period. How very sad. Someone in a marketing capacity at some record company or radio station should do something about this. Then maybe KLOVE which I love would expand their horizons and play less of the same songs all the time.

Not KLove's job to do it.. I respect what your saying and others about the classics.. but KLove is a Currents based station.. Just like you don't hear the local Mainstream CHR playing songs from the 60s.. you won't hear KLove doing classics.. It's not in their target audience.

Nice try xmusicmatt but we all know the real reason those old songs aren't played is because the people at K-Love are stupid, out of touch and only driven by the almighty dollar!

Based on what I am hearing from them and reading elsewhere, I do NOT see it this way. AT ALL! They are NOT stupid at all, and they are NOT out of touch. Whatever gave you THAT idea? ???

I also doubt that the dollar is their motive. If you actually spent some time LISTENING to them, you'd know this.

While I agree that they play the same few songs too often, the songs they do select have EXCELLENT lyrics. That's one of (if not THE) most important things regarding Christian music. I give them BIG kudos for picking VERY Christ-centered music. The ONLY flaw is the repetition.

Could another factor be the lack of classic CCM from the 70's and early 80's being available on CD or at least download? I know that some of the biggest names from that period have had compilation albums and some albums reissued, but the major labels seem to not really promote them much, so they don't get considered for airplay.

I think Xmusicmatt is correct. KLOVE is a station concerned with reaching an audience that wants to hear today's music, and just can't wait to hear the number one song over and over again. There are people like that that wont mind putting up with hearing all the other songs played, just as long as their number one song is played also.

And if I can throw my two cents in here concerning the WPHA potential playlist, I would add a few more upbeat songs to it. Like Margaret Becker's "Soul Tatoo" and maybe a DC Talk song or two.

One more thing, if you do a search for Christian 54 you'll find the old WLIX. They are playing the old stuff mentioned here, in fact that's most of what they play. But its online only. The other WLIX 94.1 plays some of today's hits but more like what Willie has on the WPHA playlist.....not that that's entirely bad! :) :)

With K-Love now reaching into the Fairfield County area, WPHA will need to differentiate itself from them. While we WILL play SOME of the same songs they do, we will NOT play them ALL, and we CERTAINLY WON'T be playing them as often! ;D We will also play the Inspirational Classics from the 1980's and 1990's on a daily basis. :D

BTW, I talked to someone this morning who has been listening to K-Love since it signed on, and he is already sick of hearing the same songs over and over. He agrees with me that while the songs they are playing are EXCELLENT, they are just PLAYED TO DEATH!

You want a nice hefty dose of the classics from the 80s (some late 70s) through 90s and a dab 2000+ then might I suggest www.ccmbacktracks.com ? Do some of these songs look familiar?? http://tunein.com/radio/CCM-Backtracks-s129505/

Yes, the station is listed in the TuneIn database which means you can listen via the TuneIn app on your smartphone in your car...in stereo!

From listening to the feed it sounds more like a jukebox (no announcer chatter, drops, etc) but even so I am enjoying it.

A religious organization "only driven by the almighty dollar" surely you jest. I'm very distraught that you would even mention the possibility.

Who runs that station? Are they on this BBS? Very interesting.
