MARINO TO MORNINGS ON KDF

All Access is reporting that Rick Marino will be the new morning host of WKDF.
Putting on the boots, belt buckles and hats!
Congrats. Welcome to the battle for 4th place in country music in Nash-town!

How will Rick Marino cope? Does Rupert Holmes have "Escape" in a country version? Will KDF bring a lighter blend of light country favorites to your work day? Will the daily anecdotes involving the Volvo and soccer practice change plots to include monster truck pulls, Harleys and Tennessee Titans football?

"KDF, hello caller."

"Hey Rick, love the show. We liked you back in the nineties at 98. Hey, I know it's early but could you play some Bocephus? Jim Bob, Stinky and I just got in from clubbin' all night and have to get ready for work. Thanks."

"You got it caller: a specially crafted set of Hank Jr. tunes for your work day. That's how we roll at KDF."

103.3 The Titanic ----

I don't know, interesting move. While I'd think this move wouldn't bring over more than a few Mix listeners, I'm thinking about those former Mix listeners who were wooed away by the Wolf's country-style Mix format -- now that group may well find their way to KDF now. 103.3 may suddenly find itself no longer fighting for #2 country, but owning it.

Remember.....Money Talks. He must have been offed a good deal. He did well at Mix.

I doubt many Mix listeners will jump ship. Mix is not a personality-driven format and never has been. Since they dropped the Muzak in the early 90s and went to the current format, a number of well-known Nashville radio people have come and gone and it has never had a significant impact on the numbers.

Interesting comments Evangelist. It's a conundrum. I think Mix listeners tend to like and feel close to
the personalities on Mix. In fact, I think they mean more to Mix listeners than most other station except Talk/Sports,
Give or take, of course, a few exceptions with huge loyal life long followings like Gerry House, Chris Romer or Chris Romer.

Then, on the other side of the coin, very few listeners would leave (or have when Rick 'left') Mix as staff changes
occur. They have no other choice musically.

However....if Sarge left, Mix probably would plummet to 1/3 of the total listenership of WNFN, WRQQ and WVNS...
hence less than nada. :)

There is nowhere else for Mix listeners to go. As I said earlier, a number of well-known Nashville radio names have come and gone through the doors of 504 Rosedale with no impact on the ratings. During my time over there, we were always told that we didn't have stars on our station because the "music is the star."

Some jocks have versatility and a personality that encompasses many formats. The biggest example is Jim Kerr, who has worked at AC and even country stations in New York before currently hosting the morning show at classic rock WAXQ. I'm assuming Marino has the same "pull" with the ladies as Kerr does, so in that regard, I would not view this as an odd move.

Marino did Saturday 10-3 on WSIX back when we were still in the 21 building...
IIRC that opened the door to his moving to 107.
Ask me later about "a baloon and a cookie"...

okay...but just one more story before bedtime.

when Marino was @ WSIX...the production director was Major Logan...nice guy with a big voice...
but he always spoke in everyday conversation like he was cutting a spot, and he seriously
over-enunciated (sp?). Major had just done a spot for some Valentine's Day promotion...order one
of those cutsey bears and the copy line was "and it comes with a baloon...and a cookie".
hard to explain here...but Major really overdid the "oo" sound...so it was "balooooooooon...and a
coooooookie"...very puke-ish and drawn out. you had to be there.
relax...there is a point here.
I've always typed/printed a prep sheet for every shift (hard to tell, huh?)...and it's always informal.
WSIX was giving away George Strait CDs this particular weekend...and since the airstaff was still making
fun of the 'baloon and a cookie' line...I just added it to my prep sheet...never actually mentioning it on air.
Marino followed me at 10am...and since I left the prep sheet on the console...who knew...but he
read it verbatim: "your chance to win the latest CD from George Strait...a baloon...and a cookie".
I called PD Doug Baker...to laugh about it...and bet him Marino would read it again. he did.

now...go to sleep

They had a Rick Marino promo on the jumbotron at the Titans/Raiders game two weeks ago. Good luck to him with the WKDF morning slot...
