Marjorie, Ellen and now Mariellen on WRKO Sat

Six hours of XX chromosomes on WRKO Saturday.

Marjorie Claprood and Ellen O'Brien were on from 10 to 1, Mariellen Burns soloing beginning at 1.

Marjorie and Ellen were both funny, though I think they'd need some time to get into a groove together in terms of timing/talking over each other, etc. It's got to be hard for Ellen who probably thinks it's her show, yet is paired up with people who act like it's their show too.... Marjorie and Joe Sciacca both kind of took the show over - opening and ending segments, taking callers, etc. When Ellen manages to get a word in she's really funny.

Don't know if she's had a chance to be on alone - I'd like to hear it...

You act like somebody's actually listening to this stuff- not likely.

Well, they had just as many callers as other Saturdays - don't know what that means for overall ratings over time.

Who do you listen to? Who would you rather have on?

At any rate, the dispised Julie Kahn and Jason Wolfe had three women on today, two of whom are quite liberal. This is something different. I thought it was worth a comment.

And, for what it's worth, I did laugh out loud a few times... I'd tune in again.

Hey all,

Worked again today in office where we had it on all day, and sometimes back and forth with TKK. I feel like I'm doing radio survey listening to the various hosts on Saturdays and since finding this board!

Finn, you are a dedicated listener, for sure. I missed last week.
Anyhow, I get the impressions they (RKO) are trying to actually find the right co-host for Ellen. We think this because they seem to make a point of sharing the show. I think that stuff you talked about is on purpose. We give an A-plus to her radio voice (or my male coworkers do, and I like it). Here's our team opinion of today: fantastic energy, Marjorie turned it up but hearing more of Ellen would be good. We laughed too. Now we can't remember how she was with Mariellen, but I remember liking it and I didn't hear Joe Sciacca. Now, to Avenue's point, there were actually some very smart callers who sounded like first timers. To me, that says they are getting different listeners and not the usual RKO cronies.

Have a great Sunday and see you here the next day we are in Quincy office park working all day!

Ellen is coming along, I think she and Sciacca could be good. Although, honestly, I thought Marjorie and Ellen fed off each other quite well. Full disclosure, I am generally a right-winger but still somewhat enjoyed Marjorie's energy with Ellen's humor and vice-versa. I would listen again and praise to WRKO for at least trying different combinations to try to get the right (no pun intended) fit. Will Marjorie be back or was this a one time. fill-in thing?

It always amazes me how quickly certain posters will "tear down an idea" or pick up on the double x chromosome theory!

At least an attempt is being made to try something different? How many radio stations can make that claim? Many are content to fill a 4-6 hour block with satellite talk programming? And face it folks...a lot of it is starting to sound the same!

Whether audience ratings give the WRKO trio a "thumb's up" or "thumb's down" will be determined within the next few months. So until the next book or two comes out, why not cut Marjorie, Ellen and Mariellen a little slack! :-*

You really think calls and listeners are related?

Fair point AvenueA - my comment "don't know what that means for overall ratings over time" was my (unsuccessful?) effort to acknowledge that.

However, David Brudney said listeners are smarter than callers, and it seemed to me (and sounds like Shotgunannie agrees) that the callers represented a wider range than usual for WRKO. One guy called in saying he'd stumbled on to them and said "I think I've fallen in love" and that he agreed with their political position on something. Their response was really funny - both Ellen's and Marjorie's voices dropped in pitch and smoothed out (sounded great) - they were flattered and it showed in their voices.

They interviewed some guy who is doing some political thing and asked him if he was married. When he said no he was single, they said 'well, not for long' and he was flustered and conceded to blushing - they laughed it up and commented on a couple of middle-aged women coming on to a younger guy.

Sorry boys (my apologies to brooklyndon), but this is fun stuff for us xx types - hard-nosed politics/current events, liberal perspective, and flirting with the occasional reference to shoes.

IF WRKO manages to to promote this effectively, I think they'll get ratings if they get the right combo. (my only objection - I love Marjorie's style, but she really needs a voice coach).

And kudos to jayradio and argytunes for wanting to try something other than same 'ol, same 'ol.

As the late great Jerry Williams would always say 'I have to entertain them [ the audience ] before I can educate them to my point of view. If you are boring you will lose them. Marjorie Clapprood certainly brings that to any microphone. Like her or hate her, she is at first always entertaining and never boring like most of RKO's full timers.

Not sure if Marjorie wants to do this full-time anymore but I for one listen to whatever station she is on.
