mark and brian

I love reading these posts about how irrelevant Mark & Brian are. Guys...the March-May 2012 three-month average with A25-54, M-F 6-10am shows them tied for third in AQH rating in the Los Angeles Metro. Irrelevant? Maybe people need to pay attention to what's real instead of what their own opinion is.

It would be a little short sighted, though, to not look towards the future when one of the duo retires, and think about filling his shoes with someone who can possibly bring equal longevity to the morning show.

Absolutely agree with the idea of using this as an opportunity to find something for the next 10 years...who knows, maybe the show will evolve to something that more closely resembles a talk format and could be the foundation for other evolutionary change. But to dismiss the current show as being irrelevant is simply approaching the subject from a listener's point of view rather than an operator's.

Ummm.....what? approaching it from a who? A listener? Last I checked, listeners give you ratings. Operators do not. Being relevant to the L I S T E N E R is the most important part of doing radio. It is the LISTENER after all that radio is B R O A D C A S T I N G to. I have never listened to Mark and Brian so I can't possibly say whether or not they are relevant, but if they are in fact IRRELEVANT to the LISTENER, then maybe it is time for change.

#3 in 25-54 means the audience doesn't find them irrelevant.

All of our bickering is irrelevant too, unless someone can shed some light on where within the 25-54 demo most of their listeners fall. If its spread across the demo, and they're ranked at #3 (which I'm guessing is partially true) then they most certainly are relevant. However, if the vast majority of their listeners fall into the upper end of the demo, then they will find themselves aged out of the demo in the next 5 to 10 years- so now is as good of an opportunity as any to try to go after a younger audience.

It's been a year since anyone posted on this thread. Well---until now, that is. It's been ten months since Mark and Brian last worked together. LARadio.com founder Don Barrett tweeted this on June 8:

"Mark Thompson has not talked with his former partner Brian Phelps since they walked out of KLOS last summer. Radio partners for 27 years."

Any ideas or theories?

Well, there's this from Mark himself:

I hope someone can explain to those outraged YouTube commenters that that video is obviously a joke (well, partly anyway).

Well I guess that makes it pretty clear. I think he could have been handled in a much classier fashion. In fact that was really beneath Mark.

The stories that they don't really like each other have been around for years, and frankly, they have done nothing to even try to deny them. But they were true professionals, in that they were the best of friends on the air where it all counted the most.

A bit more intrigue. It is clear Mark has given his personal blessing to the Heidi and Frank show and said so in several places that they are worthy heirs to the M&B legacy. I have heard him on the show at least twice now, and I rarely listen to it (so perhaps it has happened even more often than that?). Brian on the other hand, has not been heard from by anyone since that day. If Mark and Brian really dislike each other that much, it wouldn't be surprising that Brian would stay away from a show that Mark has heartily endorsed. But I think it goes even deeper than that. In the weeks leading up to the last day, KLOS management made no public commitments to their future plans, but seemed to suggest that there was a good chance that the new show would be based around Brian. My speculation is that Brian found out about the H&F show and that there would not in fact be any place for him at the station about the same time as the public learned of it. Brian would rightly feel jilted and be angry both at the station for leading him on and at Mark for so obviously supporting the show that Brian is not a part of. It is definitely clear that Mark has not used any of his industry relationships to help is partner out, who obviously wanted to continue in some capacity.

The whole thing feels like an unhappy married couple that stayed together just long enough to get the kids out of the house and onto college, and then realize that they have no reason to pretend any more, so they just get the ugly divorce and let it all hang out, and don't really care what anyone else thinks. They're both finally rid of each other.

Someone once said that radio is the lowest echelon of show business (really it's mimes) so it's no surprise that just as in TV and films, there are acts who don't like (or hated) each other: I Love Lucy had that, the X-Files did too. Google co stars who hated each other and there's plenty more examples.

It is well known that William Frawley and Vivian Vance, who played Fred & Ethel Mertz on I Love Lucy, hated each other and argued constantly. On the first day of rehearsals, Vance (who was 22 years younger than Frawley) told Desi Arnaz, ""I can't play his wife. No one will believe I'm married to that old coot." I guess we should be glad they never had a radio show. :D
