Mark Baker Fired From WIKY

I wonder if they got advanced numbers from the fall book due out???

Wait,

Dave Lehman left for a "new gig" in illinois because John Boy got another station owner to hire him so he wouldn't have to fire him.

New Flash : John Story out the door!

Joe Blair! Jeff Sloan. Jack Taddeo, Steve Edwards. Wait, there's a trail that goes back to old Englebrecht from the 1950's.

Radio! Wake up. You are here until you have been used up then we hire someone else. Good ideas? We'll get them and then not need you.

Indiana is a right to fire state. I am sure whatever Baker did it was just another radio firing. We can track the list at WIKY easier because everyone forgets the other stations that have gone away.

A few exceptions. Buddy Scott did what with the groupie at GBF? Course they didn't fire him for that.

Familiarity breeds contempt in this business. After you reach 50 and are tired of being Johnny Fever there isn't a big career field out there. Except for Daddy Dave. He still hasn't grown up!

ChiefEngineer:

I basically summed up your post in one sentence:

"It doesn't make any sense, but then again stranger things have happened in radio."

Now the team has a new coach or in this case a new Program Director, WIKY will either evolve to the next level continuing the long heritage, as it has in the past, or crash and burn. The latter option has happened before in this neck of the woods, remember what happened to WYNG and 96STO, where a heritage station is overrun by management and consultants who have their heads in a warm, moist, dark cavity of their own body. If WIKY does happen to crash and burn, Joshua might finally get his Urban on 104.1. :)

I've met Mark Baker a few times and he seems to be a good guy. Let's hope he finds success elsewhere.

Jack Taddeo? Wow! There's a blast from the past. Didn't he come to Lafayette in the 1980's to save the Nussbaum family's station?

"...Buddy Scott did what with the groupie at GBF?..."

Nor did they fire the morning man for a "personal matter". (The poor PD was confronted by the father of a girl that the morning man had gotten to know in a Biblcal sense.)

Or the midday jock being placed "on probation" for touching a local high school cheerleader in an inappropriate manner at an ECA rally? (The cheerleader was not the person who complained.)

Then there was the station accountant/shareholder that announced to a station parttimer, "your (her) mouth looks like it was designed for my Coke" (Not a Coca-Cola). The little girl ran from the station crying. And, later, her mother threaten to sue for sexual harrassment.

Or the same morning man "tieing up" (bedposts) his date the night before, and "forgetting" to loosen the ropes before going to work at 5 AM to do his show. Go ahead, just try to imagine what his date had to say when she woke up at 8AM!

"The stories are true. The names have been changed to protect the innocent?"

Just a few fond memories of the River City Rocker.

Regarding Mr. Baker, I've never heard anyone say an unkind word about him. We all hope he lands somewhere soon.

BTW, wasn't his wife on the air there, too? Rob, wasn't Deb his wife?

I wouldn't flip WIKY because it has heritage and still has huge 25-54s, correct? :)

Isn't the real station to watch WDKS? I see three people have been axed including Holly, Falen, and another guy, Nikki B, a Black Girl gets nights and they have Keith Curry, another non white DJ, plus they've added a Hip Hop mixshow at 10:00(friday nights it runs till 2)

Yes Joshua you're right, I was joking about flipping WIKY urban.

In regards to BigTimeEngineer's question, from what I understand Mark and Deb are in the process of or have divorced. Also, thanks for the GBF stories. For anyone who has never heard them live or on tape, 1280 WGBF was one hell of a station back in the day. It was a wild place on and off the air. SkippertT can add to the stories since he interned there. It ticked off parents, blew up phone exchanges and lots of other things but turned this town upside down and provided very memorable radio. Radio in this town today is as boring as it was prior to the debut of the River City Rocker circa 1975. We need more than ever the Jim Wood's, Buddy Scott's and their passion back in River City Radio and the ability to interpret research not just follow it blindly.

Finally, while working for Regent I had suggested an on air 1280 WGBF reunion for the 30th anniversary, Labor Day 1975 was it debut. I had produced the 96STO reunion so I knew the mechanics (covering expenses and details) and promotional possibilities, but the market manager's answer was an emphatic "no". Since it had nothing to do with an end of year bonus, he had no interest. Oh well.

Hey Rob any chance of a 25 year reunion this year? Nevermind I wouldn't be able to make it as I'll be on my honeymoon :) Hope things are well in Oboro/Evansville

Hey Scott:

Spoon and I brought it up during lunch and agreed it wasn't worth pursuing. Mostly because it's no longer 96STO and it would be hard to connect it to the current Hot 96; a tough sell to the new owner and management. Besides, everything came together so well for the twentieth, we'd hate for the 25th to be a let down.

BTW, Congratulations!

Rob

I love how you mentioned the race of the talent... "Nikki B, a black girl" and another non-white DJ... What in the world does the race of the air talent have to do with anything?

Dude, I wasn't trying to be racist, I just made a observation. Sorry if I offended anyone. In Evansville, I can't recall a point at which one non white DJ held a high profile slot down, let alone two.

I'm glad changes are coming to Kiss. I hope like I said that it goes in the right direction and not the wrong one.

Oh hey Keith (Ray D Yo),

Since you asked...

Radio, for the most part, doesn't pay jack. I got really tired of living my whole life for radio and getting so little back. The "new guy" made me realize how much I hated being in radio.

I don't think Kiss is all rhythmic, because it shows Daughtry getting some airplay. But it's a lot more than it has been before.
And just so it's said, people who get into radio to get rich are in it for the wrong reasons, just as people who call out someone on a message board are usually just plain wrong.

Yes, calling someone out on a gossip board like this is wrong. But while no one gets into this business in hopes of getting rich, only losers and priests take vows of poverty. I've been in this business for twenty years and as long as I can maintain a middle-class way of life, I'll stay in it full-time. You can't live like an 18-year-old forever.

Back to the original post. Why is Mark out? Money? Changing the direction of the station which makes no sense? This is one of the most baffling moves in recent memory.
