MARK DAVIS IN FOR RUSH LIMBAUGH TODAY

As many of you know, my pal Mark Davis sat in for Rush Limbaugh on March 4.

I spoke with him yesterday, and he gave me a heads-up that he will be pinch hitting for Rush again today.

Since today is the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. King, and tomorrow finds the Tigers in the NCAA Final Four, he tells me that Memphis will be a topic of discussion.

Be listening from 11am – 2pm on WREC.

My favorite memory of Mark Davis is when he was working at WHBQ in the mid-80's. The sfx carts that he used during his show were placed at the top of the rack and labeled "DO NOT USE." Ignoring the warning, the morning talk show host would borrow the buzzer sound and use it when contestants gave the wrong answer. Mark got wind of it and took matters in his own hands. He erased the buzzer and replaced it with a woman in the deep throws of passion.

I just happened to be driving somewhere early the next day and heard a morning contestant give the wrong answer followed by what sounded like the trailer for Deep Throat.

I laughed so hard that I almost hit a telephone pole.

RoyBoy,

This incident caused quite a buzz in the building for a couple of days -- here's how it played out:

The year was 1987. Mark and I did an hour on the air together every Friday at 3:00pm, the last hour of his week.

We had a few carts in the studio, maybe 10 or 12, that we would use. A few movie sound bites, a few produced comedy pieces, and a few sound effects.

Bill Adkins was doing mornings at the time, and we did indeed get wind that he was using them.

We actually didn't erase anything, we just changed the labels around so that only we knew which sound was on which cart.

As you recall correctly, when Bill used the cart labeled "Buzzer," it wasn't the buzzer at all.

Adkins was livid. He even confronted Mark at the station and told him: "You don't do that to your own, you don't do that to your own!"

Ah, the good old days.

Kenny,

You have a better memory than I do. Thanks for filling in the details.

By the way, that wasn't the only time Bill Adkins confronted someone at WHBQ. Ron Martin did sports back then. As I am sure you will remember, Bill was a huge Larry Finch apologist. Anytime that Ron would say anything less than "Larry is God," Bill would take up for him on the air. One morning, his reaction was more animated than usual, and Ron slammed down his headphones and stormed out of the control room. Bill smoothed it over and went into a commercial. During the break, Bill marched into the newsroom and confronted him. From what I was told, it almost came to blows. Fortunately, they were able to patch things up and work together again.

I remember Bill's regular producer had a list of "Adkinisms."
Phrases that he would use when he was stuck for something to say:
INDEED and A-Fred - are the only two I can remember from the list.
