Mark Larsen Reflects on 30 Years in SDR

Oh boy. Thirty years of vanilla pudding. I never
got this guy, remember when he called himself the
"funniest man in San Diego". Of course back in
the day KFMB was gold, with Padres, H&B, and
Clark Anthony. I don't think he was a bad PD,
but what did the guy add to KFMB?. He will always
lose his current daypart at KOGO, and that LA gig
lasted a few months. For a change here is a list
of great former pm drivers for the once Mighty KUF-MUB

Johnny Michaels
Perry Allen
Bobby Rich
Don Berns
Danny Davis

By the way I always thought Jack Woods was a genuis, the
way he turned around the station, with that gold based
"california gold" format in the early to mid 70's.

So true - and were it not for Cliff Albert and the KFMB good old boys network, he would not be on KOGO today.

More Mark Larsen bashing

Boy, you guys sure hate Mark. And you never seem to skip the opportunity to say how much you don't like him. I had no idea this many people didn't like Mark Larsen. It's no wonder he's been on the air in San Diego so long...

I'm just curious, lets take a survey. Exactly how many people on this board think Mark Larsen is, not-so-good?

No one said they hate Mark: I used to listen to him regularly on KPRZ (but mostly because he came on after and before other programs I enjoyed). Mark is a journeyman announcer who has been in the right place at the right time and has been a great schmoozer, but his longevity in local radio is due more to that any sort of on-air talent that would make him stand out from others who've toiled in those same vinyards.

Mark is simply the Durwood Kirby of San Diego radio :)

Re: More Mark Larsen bashing

Bob is right, I certainly don't hate him. He's a nice man.
But that doesn't make him a good talent. Sorry, just because
he has the right connections politically and through his church
doesn't make him a great talent.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, Mark Larson is just bland radio. I don't hate him, I just don't think he's in the same league as somebody like Hedgecock who bounced into radio as an after-thought and turned out to be great at it. Yet Larson has been placed in a prime spot one the number one talk radio station in the city. It's a travesty, there are far more talented people that deserve that spot. I for one would like to see Stacy Taylor out of that schlocky KLSD station and back on KOGO. KLSD is a joke, and a bad one at that.

I still laugh every time I hear those stupid News Cruise commercials, they sound like they are begging for people to sign up now.

Re: More Mark Larsen Reality

I see, so you three don't "hate" him, you simply like taking time to repeat every now and then how talentless he is.

But you don't hate him...

If you want to bash how about the horrible management at CC and how crappy they treat their employees. Maybe now that there is some real direction with Bollinger instead of the joke of the past year things will change. But I doubt it..

Re: More Mark Larsen Reality

Garrett can't distingush the difference between
judging talent critically and hating them, man
that's weird. Maybe what you mean is we shouldn't
pick on Larsen so much. probably true, but there
is so damn little live and local talk in this
market, and one-prime slot is occupied than as
someone stated "a journeyman-talk host", its
very noticable. Hedgecock is a proven winner,
who outperforms the rest of the station in general.

Can we stay on the subject and away from whether or not Garrett's choice of words conveyed different meanings to different people?

Thank you.<P ID="signature">______________

Okay, lets review...

First of all, the subject of the thread is mis-leading; "Mark Larsen reflects on 30 years..."
I had to open the message to find out it was yet another bashing of Mark Larsen.

Second, how many times are you guys gonna come on here and call Mark Larsen talentless? You say you don't "hate" Mark Larsen. Yet there's about 5 of you here, who keep comming on (its the same people and you know who you are), and taking opportunity after opportunity to remind us all how "talentless" you believe he is. Now, it seems to me that you have to really despise or be jealous of someone to constantly go to the trouble of taking time out of your day, and waste valuable bandwitdth to talk about how "bland" or "medeocre" you think he is. I find this fasciniating, since San Diego is a very hard market to crack into (trust me, I tried). So if Mark is so untalented that you need to keep comming here and reminding us, he must be a real lucky guy.

Honestly, I'm sick of the same 5 guys comming on here and making the same remarks about the same broadcaster. And lets say for the sake of arguement that Mark Larsen is boring (to you), do you think anyone else cares? Mark Larsen has done a lot of good things in the community and is a veteran broadcaster in San Diego, and that's good enough for me and likely many others. For an "untalented" broadcaster, Salem broadcasting seems to have apprceciated his talents, as did Midwest TV, and Clear-channel. Oh yeah, and did I mention CBS Radio?

Have any of you ever taken a tour of Mark's studio while he does his show? Mark often can do 3 or 4 things at once, with one hand grabbing a cart with another sliding an audio level simultaneously. All this while making wise cracks, entertaining studio guests, and doing countless voices (Ronald Regan, Richard Nixon, Santa Clause, etc). You're right, no real talent... How many OF YOU can do all that?

So if you don't mind, can we stop with negative comments about Mark? It's gettnig kinda old. Really old...

And by the way, I don't remember this thread having anything to do with Clear-channel.

Well actually it is relevant because he keeps accusing us of hatred, so it is perhaps important to s-p-e-l-l it out slowly so he understands what WE are trying to convey.

I can. And so can most people in radio - or least it used to be that most could, and had, to multi-task while on the air. I've done live newcasts during emergencies when I had a network feed in the right side of my headphones, a producer giving me info on the left side, someone else handing me copy, and I was reviewing another piece of copy as I delivered spoken updates. At the same time I was knitting a sweater for mom, trying to think of a cure for cancer, communicating telepathically with the ghost of Richard Nixon, getting a pedicure from the general manager and I had a cake in the oven (which by the way was not a mix - I whipped it up from scratch during commercial breaks)!

Re: More Mark Larsen Reality

And here you are, trying to make the thread about me. You've failed to prove that you don't hate Mark Larsen, and so now you are focusing on some insignificant typo I seem to make.

Interesting...
Can we please get back to talking about radio?

Or would all the finger pointers prefer I just close every thread started about Mark Larsen?

Re: Okay, lets review...

Garrett,obviously the conversation has gone
over your head. "Gee he can play carts and
talk too". Show me numbers, where has Larsen
beat anyone? You should have applied to be
Mark's go-fer.

Re: Okay, lets review...

Yea, Bob but could you do it and maintain that
neat hairstyle that Larsen has?

Your results may vary and verbal darts in the rear view mirror .... may be larger than they appear.

Love your show like Tom Cruise likes bouncin' on Oprah's couch,
