Mark Packer Leaves WFNZ... Greater Media, Take Note...

"The Packman" is leaving CBS Radio's WFNZ after thirteen years:

Packer expects to be back on the air when his non-compete clause in the Charlotte market expires... next July.

July... sounds like the perfect time to launch a sports station, especially one that has rights to an NFL team's play-by-play... Hey, Greater Media has rights to the Panthers on the mighty WBT... Say, don't they own any other stations in the market? Yes, that's right - 107.9 The Link... Depending on how 107.9 performs in the PPM's with their latest tweak, this would be the perfect opportunity for Greater Media to sign Packer and get the rights to ESPN Radio for the market.

Armed with ESPN, Panthers PBP and "The Packman," how can a sports station on FM not put up a good fight against the former "Franchise" on AM 610?

First of all, 107.9 is not going sports. 730-AM is also sports, that's where he'll be going if anywhere.

I just hope that, wherever the Packman ends up, that he continues his show, which is still aired (with the fill-in hosts that have been running it since he left the station) here in the Triangle on WDNC-AM 620 The Buzz. I've been a regular listener since I first found him five years ago (then on the former Triangle Sports Talk 1490/1090; after that station died, the show migrated to its current home on what was first "620 The Bull" and later became "620 The Buzz" last year when Capitol Broadcasting bought the station.

Mark was on Pirate Radio 1250 in Greenville on Tuesday explaining the situation. He left to start his own show, one that he owns. Every affiliate except for WFNZ is basically his... the syndication of Primetime was because of his own efforts. He's working to get studio space in Charlotte and start his show in the beginning of January. He can't be aired in Charlotte until July 1, but until then he'll still be on all the other affiliates.
