Mark Schlemmer leaves WONE and Sportstalk 980

This is on his blog on the WONE website:
Well this is one thing I never thought I'd be writing, at least not today. Yesterday was my last show on Sportstalk 980 and Wone. I want to thank each and everyone of you for making the show what it was and for making my life a lot easier over the past 4 years. I will miss all of you more than you will ever know. I also want to thank all of my sponsors that believed in me and the show, I am sorry I am no longer on the air. I feel like I am letting all of you down. To all of my guests thank you as well. The list of national stars we had on is unreal but I guess not enough. Not much more to say but thank you again. I will miss you all.

Mark Schlemmer

They said on the radio that Mark Schlemmer tendered his resignation. There will be a new show on Monday at 3 hosted by 2 hosts

Seems he was quite surprised about getting fired. How could you ever be surprised when you work for Clear Channel?

We must always keep in mind that radio is a business. If a show or station is not making money there will be changes. The problem is Clear Channel has proven in several markets they do not know how to sell sports stations. Outside of WLW, name a sports station run by Clear Channel that turns in solid ratings books and also make money.

All you have to do is listen to the two sports stations in Cincinnati and WONE to see how many sales and sponsorship opportunties they miss.

The problem with Clear Channel is in Dayton and Ciincinnati their managers have not offered the time of sales opportunites that coud bring them a great deal of money. They are missing ways to make more money off college sports and high school sports. It was pointed out to me before that it is so wrong to put high school sports play by play on either one of the two Cincinnati sports stations., I guess its wrong to take on a solid revenue stream. Plus a very loyal local audience.

I give credit for the two Mark's in the Dayton market for doing local sports talk. I have listened to both. I think Mark at WONE had the edge over WING's host.

I think the "CORE" of the problem is the GM's have several stations to run and the sports station isn't really on their radar. If their PD is not pushing for more focus on the stations then make a change there. The problem is the GM's/ Sales Managers have written off the stations too soon and not realize they have a potential mini cash cow.

Trust me you can make money in sports radio and it can be a lot of fun.

It's too bad the Schlemmer Show didn't continue. He seemed connected to his audience. It was entertaining and local. Is Dayton a dying market? I thought it was good to have a local talent on the airwaves. The only talent we have is from Indianapolis...Bob and Tom. All others are music jukeboxes. That's just my opinion. I realize some will disagree. Best of luck to Schlemmer.

Bob and Tom are the only talent we have on the air in Dayton? That's a slap in the face to the local talent left on the air in Dayton. B&T have to be the most annoying show on the radio today. All that laughing over every joke they tell(That only they think is funny)gets old after about 30 seconds. You have to look no further than Columbus to see how much hatred B&T had over there. They've been on three stations, 105.7 The Fox(Changed formats), 103.9 TED FM(Changed formats), and 99.7 The Rock(Went back to live and local in the mornings when they changed their name back to The Blitz). I'll never forget The Blitz town hall meeting where the listeners thought B&T were so talented that they complained so much that management dumped their awful old man show. I guess I'm not in their 55+ demo.

I enjoyed listening to Mark Schlemmer's show. I always liked how he let the people on the phone lines talk about whatever they wanted to. It seemed like the show was doing well. Not sure why they went in this direction. On the facebook page for the show someone wrote and said that Mark wasn't being paid fairly and that is ultimately why he resigned.

If you want to know how much time goes unsold check out the Rome show when they come back from breaks. Nearly every time there is at least 30 sec and sometimes a full minute of filler music while other stations around the country bring in money during those times (well I assume someone is or they would not have the break fill need). My wife asked me what was up with the long music breaks and it kind of made her sad. That is the reason right? I am not in the radio biz.

That would be correct. IMO the only reason that WONE is Sports is to be a thorn in the side of WING-AM. The Main Line-CC battle continues...

To Alans613 what formats would you suggest for WONE and WING? Would you stay with the sports format or go with something else?

I'd keep WING-AM Sports. WONE should've NEVER dumped their Adult Standards format. It was doing consistant #s back before the flip to Sports, so I would flip it back to Standards.
