MARK STEVENS DEAD

MARK STEVENS OF "STEVENS & PRUETT" ON KEGL has died in Houston.

His roots are in Ft. Worth from KFJZ AM 1270 when he did nights, afternoons and mornings through much of the 1960's appearing as "Marky Baby".

In Houston in the 70's he was half of the "Hudson & Harrigan" show on KILT.

Back to DFW in the 80's as half of "Stevens & Pruett" on THE EAGLE 97.

Finishing up at KLOL in Houston with a brief reappearance syndicated to Dallas on THE EDGE.

He had a long and nice ride...

Sad to hear this. Does anyone know what happened? Had he been sick? I use to listen to them all the time. They did a great job. Prayers are with the family

NO!! Ahhh, hate to hear this. He was also part of the BizRadio Network with his foodie show, "Stevens and Cleverley." His daughter died (suicide? IIRC) at some point while he was hosting that show, perhaps around 2006. I remember Mark showing up for the very first Texas Radio Hall of Fame (he was a first-year inductee,) working the room like a superstar, and wearing a reflective silver sportsjacket...pretty pretentious. Then again, I never cared for him as part of "Stevens and Pruitt"...BUT...I tuned in faithfully every week when he did "Stevens and Cleverley"--he really showed his human-ness and was off his high horse and was genuinely honest, funny and entertaining.

Listened to him all thru High School.i met him once,he was a nice guy.

I'm sorry, I made an error and at a bad time. Mark's daughter Kim DID NOT die from suicide-related causes. The obit says she simply died in her sleep. She passed away in FW on Aug 23, 2005 at age 43. My deepest apologies to all for not checking first.

Used to listen to "Marky Baby" when I was in elementary school on KFJZ in the 60's

Worked with him in the 80's at the Eagle and had the privilege of Producing Stevens & Pruett when Brian Shannon was on vacation or sick.

Amazing to watch them work.

Used to tell him I listened to him when I was a kid. Told me once " what do mean when your WERE a kid?"

Damn.....we've lost Uncle Waldo, Nymphia Scooter Pie and ol' mangy Tripod.

And who can forget Rufus, the Story Guy.....Today's story is called, Out and About with Big-Butted Dale Hansen.

Classic!

Not to mention umpteen Clarice Tinsley jokes...

Ugh, Alzheimer's has taken too many good and talented folks. I'm shocked and sad. A small part of my radio listening history growing up has passed....Mark, you'll be missed.

This news brings me great personal sadness. I was "Mark-E-Baby's" afternoon drive newsman in the early 70's at "Radio Ft. Worth, K - F - J - Z", at a time when KFJZ - The Big 1270 RULED the radio airwaves of Ft. Worth. They were essentially KLIF's Ft. Worth equal, since neither station could adequately penetrate the other's city limits very well at night.

In addition to his wit, his amazing sense of humor (which really came out more in his later years of Houston and KEGL), "The Mark of Ft. Worth" as he was known back then was a fine human being, a well respected concert promoter, and an all-around good guy. His connections into the inner workings of the music business were beyone belief, always on a first name basis with the rock stars and the movers and shakers of the day. I had the rare pleasure of working for Mark, both on and off the air, serving as his production manager and concert sound/lighting provider. Anyone remember the many "Sunshine Festivals" he staged on the land now known as Alliance Airport, or the excellent series of intimate, small venue concerts held at the downtown Hollywood movie theatre on 7th St?

His personality was almost as amazing as his wardrobe (but not nearly as voluminous as his set of hair pieces!) Mark was a flamboyant dresser. Arriving for his 3 -7 drive shift, one might think one of the Beatles had arrived, replete in high-topped boots and Nehru jacket. Think Sgt. Peppers album cover! As a result of his stylish garb, Mark and Stan Wilson, the longtime GM of KFJZ entered into a partnership, forming Mark Sebastian Ltd, a "bleeding edge" clothing store just off the West Freeway in Ft. Worth, not far from the KFJZ-TSN studios. Bleeding Edge indeed! It truly "bled" Mark to death. Mark never forgave Stan for, as Mark once put it "F%$ing me out of my life savings."

I lost complete contact with Mark after he left KFJZ, which was shortly after I left the live side of the microphone in radio, headed instead for the technical side.

Mark Stevens was one-of-a-kind. I will always cherish how he gave this 21 year old kid a taste of bigtime radio. And it tasted really, really good! Mark my friend...you will be, you already are, so missed!

When they left the Eagle for Houston was it just for a pay increase, or had they peaked and coming down in DFW? Big Fan right here BTW, big big fan. RIP

I'm 56 years old, and I have wonderful memories of listening to Mark Stevens on KFJZ back in the day. I can still hear his jingle: "He's on! . . . Marky Baby!"

Happy trails to you, until we meet again.

He meant so much to all of us in the radio business. He once told my boss I was the "funniest newsman" he'd ever heard. As we say in Texas, I liketa died'n gonta heaven.

Like so many others I listened to him as well from Westcliff elementary to Mclean Jr Hi. I got to work at 4801 West Freeway in the 70s, and I remember Linda, the receptionist told me that she liked giving tours in the afternoon: she would take kids back to see Dave Tucker finish his shift, take them around the corner to the FM and the TSN newsroom, and then back to KFJZ just as Mark was rolling. Watching him work was priceless. At least half of the carts in that huge cart carousel were Mark E. Baby's dropins.

Thoughts and prayers to his family.

Wow. Thanks for passing this info on. Good memories of him in both Houston and Dallas. For me, when I pass, the highest compliment anyone could pay would be to remember me as a friend 'riding' in their car on the commute to or from work. Though folks thought he was a little gruff personally, he provided years of entertainment to those of us disgruntled and stuck in Houston traffic!
