Mark Volman, a founding member of the 1960s rock band the Turtles and singer known as "Flo" of Flo & Eddie, died in Nashville, Tenn. on Friday.

Pat St. John is playing Turtles tracks throughout his SiriusXM show this afternoon. So far, he hasn't mentioned -- and probably won't -- the long-running feud between the Turtles and his employer that resulted in a total ban on Turtles songs being played on the service for many years. SXM finally relented only a month or so ago, despite having lost a good chunk of change to Volman and his partner Howard Kaylan after losing a legal game of chicken over payments for old music. Maybe someone in the corner offices heard that Volman wasn't doing well and figured it was time to stop holding the grudge. I can't imagine any of the '60s jocks that SXM employs would have been happy to get a memo from management today telling them not to mention Volman or play any Turtles songs.

Volman and Kaylan also contributed vocals on T. Rex's "Bang A Gong (Get It On)". Didn't know that 'til just now thanks to Pat St. John.
 
I'm a bit surprised that Mark went first. Howie has had a number of health issues lately and was actually unable to tour for a while. Mark continued to tour even with the Lewy body dementia.

There was a thread on this in June. Someone there posted that the ban was initiated by the Turtles. Under the terms of the DMCA, artists can request their music not get played.

It was The Turtles who weren’t letting SXM play their music, not the other way around as many believe.

Guess they realized they’re only hurting fans and that 60s Gold is the biggest place for fans

I had a wonderful experience sitting on the front edge of the stage and talking for at least an hour with Mark after a Turtles concert in Ohio 25 years ago. He told me all about the trials and tribulations the group went through and was really a nice guy. So sorry to hear of his passing.

The ban wasn't initiated by the Turtles at our oldies station in Colorado, it was initiated by me calling our GM and telling him, "Immediately pull all of the songs by the Turtles!" While I realize it had little to know effect, sometimes you have to take a stand.
 
He was touring with the "Happy Together" tour lately. Obviously with his vocal issues [throat cancer a while back], you could tell his mic wasn't on but he was still up there having fun. I'm glad Ron Dante gave him the spotlight and chance to keep doing what he liked. I hope he wasn't doing it because he was forced to, to pay medical or other bills.
