Market 18 is good place to be!

Whada we got that they ain’t got????

Well, I’ll tell ya….

They ain’t got Oldies. We got Oldies
They ain’t got Standards. We got Standards
They ain’t got Country. We got Country (yes it’s across the sound, but we got it!)
They ain’t got Alternative. We got Alternative
They ain’t got REAL Dance. We got REAL dance.
And everything they got, we got too!

Lets face it folks, we may complain at times, but market 18 is a much better place to be than market #1

I tell you what, I think its time some of our local owners start running their stations more like the MAJOR MARKET Stations they are. A few of the stations are pretty much on the right track. Others are not. This is not just a radio problem. This affects TV and print media as well. We are market #18 out of almost 300. That is a Major deal. Our market is stuck in the dark ages of being in the shadow of NYC. That may have been true at one point. I believe Nassau County used to be part of Queens a long time ago. Things have changed a lot since then. Population density continues to grow further east away from NYC.

We also have a disturbing history of losing our local radio stations to NYC. This is a problem for NJ as well as they have lost several local media outlets to both NYC and Philly. We need to stop letting our local stations get plucked away to other markets.

And true, as much as some people complain, our market is better than a lot of others. Hopefully it can stay that way, if not get even better.

I think that LI has some major hurdles that are pretty much impossible to overcome. The first one is that most of the stations are only class A's and they don't cover a big chunk of the market. Without the coverage, the ad revenue isn't going to be great. Add to that all of the big class B's from NYC and CT that flood the dial and it's even worse. I know that stations in much smaller markets make a lot more money and can afford to pay the talent better.

My guess is that most of the LI stations (not including 'BLI & WALK) are closer to market # 40 in how many people could potentially tune in.

I'm not a professional, but I always thought that the Long Island book should be divided up further, perhaps a Nassau and a Suffolk book, with the East End book embedded within that. There's a pretty major difference in the stations one receives in most of Nassau county, vs. Central Suffolk, vs. the East End, and ultimately, I feel it hurts most Long Island stations, since they are, as you pointed out, mostly Class A's with relatively weak signals. That's why so many local stations can barely even get out of the 1's, or 0's, even if in their primary coverage area, they have a pretty decent sized audience. I feel that hurt WLIR for many years, and is hurting stations like Island 94.3 or the TMO stations and generally almost every East End station, in the "Long Island" book.

The "East End" already has it's own book. "Hamptons-Riverhead" is Market #259.

Yes, I know that, that's why I made reference to it in my message. See below:
