WTF?

Is this an AM translator? A buyout of KFMY?

Strategic positioning on the dial I must admit.........

By the way....what's the power/coverage of the new 97.7 signal? I know it's hopeless north of Lynnwood due to CBUF's monster signal from Vancouver (which is almost comparable to Bellingham stations in NW Washington), but I would have thought if they weren't going to cannibalize KPLZ, the next noticeable signal with potential to be big that nobody already big owns would be 104.5.....

However, slipping in KOMO on 97.7 was a pretty sly move on KOMO's part. However I'm also glad KOMO is keeping the 1000 kHz signal. No matter what people say about ADI, as I learned from our mini-blackout in Skagit County a few weeks ago, most local stations here are utterly useless in ANY emergency. KOMO was kicking ass while other stations here were still scratching their heads while waiting for power to the studios, office and satellite dishes to come back on.....

I guess thats it for South sound broadcasting then? I remember the good ole' 99.3 KAYO, I wonder why they decided to get out of the biz.

speculation time!

But 97.7 is somewhat weak. It barely reaches the eastside, and forget it if you're north of lynnwood. If this is their answer to KIRO-FM, its a pretty lousy one. The signal already overlaps on a good receiver somewhere between everett and stanwood, but I'm not sure exactly what the FCC+CRTC agreement says in terms of encroachment.

So what about all the classic rock folk in the south sound? I bet they ain't too happy about this!

So did Fisher buy the station, or doing a full time lease of airtime? I know that Greg Smith is in the business of building up stations and reselling them once he gets a good offer--same thing happened with KAYO when Bustos media came knocking. I am sure that the guys at KXXO and KGY are jumping up and down at this--one less competitor in the South Sound.

KFMY currently broadcasts around 70k from South Moutain (full class C)--could Fisher potentially chance the COL, and do a downgrade to a C2 or C3 and get it on Cougar or Tiger?

NO. The South Mt site is as close as they can get to Seattle. You can't move a 2nd adjacent much closer, even with a downgrade.

They don't know it yet, but they will on Friday...

KJR-FM actually does pretty good until around Centralia-Chehalis south and Montesano to the southwest. KDUX covers the gaps on the coastal side and KRQT plays well from Centralia southbound. These are some options anyway.

It's kinda sad to watch KFMY go.......

As someone who listens to KISM 92.9 in Bellingham, I would be surely pissed if that station was lost. Sure there are classic rock stations that get close to Bellingham, but as soon as you go east towards mt. baker, or south east to sedro woolley, you loose the clarity of canadian stations, and the KJR / KZOK aren't too good either.

I don't think KISM is going anywhere just yet. It's pretty much a local institution in Bellingham/NW WA and have been through every incarnation they've gone through from 1960 on (from classical-B/EZ of the '60s. AOR of the '70s, Modern Rock of the early '80s, CHR of the mid '80s to '92, the AAAish "Independent Rock" phase of the '90s and classic rock of the late '90s to today.)

The signal still goes everywhere from Tacoma to Courtenay, BC except for a few spots with natural obstructions or translators/stations on 92.9 or 93.1. KISM/KAFE are also Saga's bread and butter up here and if it loses KISM or KAFE, there's really no point in them being here. If Fisher were to buy KISM or KAFE, they'd probably have to buy the whole enchilada platter known as Cascade Radio Group with it because I just don't see Saga willing to limp along with just one FM and three AMs to support with it. And I don't think Fisher would want to automatically inherit all these AM stations either and their problems just to get their mitts on one lousy FM when there's cheaper, if more imperfect options elsewhere.

I don't see KWPZ as an option either because It's a major outlet for Crista.

Either way, money doesn't talk these days, it SCREAMS. And a nice fat briefcase full of $$$ in your face still has far more sex appeal than anyone's best educated guesses. We'll just have to wait and see.....

I should clarify, I don't think KISM will go anywhere, rather KFMY is similar to KISM, and both I think are doing well on their own. Its just sad to see KFMY go, and I already know a few friends down there looking for a satellite radio for their wheelin' rigs =P

I agree with you about KISM/KAFE, it'd take a large lump sum of money to sell. Both 92.9 and 104.3 are money makers, and KGMI doesn't do too poorly either. Heck, even KBAI I've heard is gaining with the progressive hippies up there ;D Saga has no reason to sell unless they're financially unstable system-wide.

Don't kid yourself, every radio station out there is up for sale. Doesn't matter if it's Saga in Bellingham or some Ma and Pa shop in Alabama. Allen was willing to take a big haircut in Portland to get out, don't believe for one second that any group wouldn't want to get rid of some properties.

Right now is a great time to buy radio stations at bargain-basement prices. Problem is getting $$$ for it in this economy.

Damn! That is a good signal ??? main signal reaches everett to Centralia and fringe covers the entire metro ??? How did this move in sneak up on everyone. All I heard about was 104.5 which aint even a deal yet. Is it's signal as strong ???

I assume that KOMO FM will broadcast in mono and get an even better coverage.

I'd like to see that too...was driving around to test the coverage and only real annoyance I ran into was multipath making the stereo kick in/out. Maybe not as noticable if music isn't playing....but I agree that if you don't NEED the stereo and are running a station that's essentially a rimshot it takes one variable out of the equation.

You forget about the area terrain and all our valleys. I can hear this thing in the car, but no way in the Madison Valley in my home, just like their ex-morning show person mentioned to Linda Thomas on her P-I Blog. I also haven't received clear reception in the valley along SH167.

just heard the flip. sad indeed =(

Drove from the eastside to Bellingham tonight. KFMY faded a little from everett mall to downtown everett, and then bounced back pretty well until the Camano island/stanwood exit. After that, I started getting fade in from Canada.

On the easide, the signal faded in and out as you go on 405 between SR-522 and I-5. If the broadcast in mono, I think that fringe could be greatly extended.
